Muzak follows us every where. We are forced to listen to it, whether we like it or not. Now's your chance to send a message to its creators. Go Postal--Whatdoyathink?

I really think it's not necessary. For some, it can be a welcome relief to the angst-ridden music they normally subject themselves to. On the other hand, sometimes listening to it makes us relish what we prefer even more. I don't personally run into the stuff enough to bother me. I WISH the places I worked at had music in the elevators.

Worst of all they torture you with it while you're on hold with the occasional message every 30 seconds

'Your call is important to us,

one of our operators will be with you shortly'

grrrrrrrr

Believe it or not..muzak exists for a purpose.

Accousticians invented the concept in the 50s ..to create 'white noise' for the backround of certain environments.

Usually public hallways , airports, bus depots, malls and yes, elevators.

In order for people to feel comfortable in public spaces... there needs to be a certain backround decibel level in place.

You have heard the old line.."so quiet ...you could here a pin drop".

If the backround noise is too quiet in these environments..you are able to hear peoples conversations..too much machinery noise...etc.

With the proper amount of filtered backround white noise... accoustical privacy is increased, and even louder noises , like the dentists drill...are muffled, so as to be deemed acceptable to our ears.

So there is still much ongoing research as to exactly what tones and rhythm patterns work the best.

But rest assured ..that great scientific minds (with little music sensibility) ...are working on it right now.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
