I just got an upgrade on my hi-speed internet service to 8MB download, and 760 kps upload :) I still remember the AOL dial up days

I'm thinking of switching providers for a few months to take advantage of the "new customer" perks. [extra movie channels etc]

I'm thinking about going back to dial up... broadband is wasted on me these days. No time to take advantage of it... well... cept for a few downloads that'd take a week on dial up but part of the enjoyment in downloading stuff was the wait..... yeah right!

Comcast's CEO appears to be against net neutrality - his focus on making the web faster...which is good for moi :)

Meanwhile, Comcast is expected to announce next week the launch of Powerboost, a new feature for its high-speed Internet subscribers that will provide users with bursts of speeds up to 16 Mb per second.

According to Mr. Burke, the service would offer consumers the super-high speed only when they are using their computer. When subscribers are not using the terminal, the speed will automatically drop to a lower level.

i`m on 3.5Mbps/512Kbps......upgrading to 6 Mbps shortly....our govt has just ordered the main telco Telecom N.Z (american-owned) to unbundle its copper wire infrastructure (paid for by generations of nz taxpayers) so other companies can put their exchange h/ware into the main exchange system to provide their own separate ISP services...more competition.....cheaper.....higher speeds..privatisation of our telecommunications structure was an absolute failure resulting in a major monopoly being created....new zealanders have been royally fucked on both broadband pricing and speeds for the last 15 years since privatisation.....the govt had to re-regulate to get real competition into the local market......it should improve rapidly from now on...... :)

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
