How To Pirate A Vinyl Record

That's right, you heard me. Ok, this may be low tech, but Lifehacker ran a column today from QT.Net on how to duplicate a vinyl record at home. So hurry up, run to the store, and get the supplies...when you are done you can go to the club and DJ for your friends...

Rip....? Vinyl......?

Does not compute!

I don't compute much.

Run a line from your stereo to the line in on your computer sound card. Lots of software will put it on your harddrive. The problem is it doesn't separate the tracks and it only rips in real time. Then you have to separate the tracks if you want and so on. It takes some time but once you get the hang of it ...... you still won't like it.

You can rip from the radio, tapes, vinyl the same way.

Sounds like a lot of work... I think I will patent a state-of-the-art 45 drive.

Honestly, I'd have to worry about the person that rips vinyl.

Oh, wait, it's that "warmer sound" thing isn't it?

It is always warmer when your music has that sound similar to a cracking fire running over it.

For me it has nothing to do with warmer sound. It has to do with albums that were never released on cd. I'd buy the cd before I would rip an album I have but if there is no cd to be bought then your choices are limited.

You can also run the files through a filter to remove the snap, crackle and pop. I've heard some albums that were vinyl rips and they sound as good as cd rips.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
