Austrian golds lift mood after doping saga

Mon Feb 20, 2006 3:28 PM ET

TURIN (Reuters) - Three Austrian Winter Olympic golds provided a perfect counterweight to the extraordinary doping saga which continued to rock their team on Monday.

Michaela Dorfmeister, who won the women's super-G, and men's giant slalom winner Benjamin Raich brought the smile back on to Austrian faces with the Games entering its final week and a team win in the ski jumping gave them a further fillip.

American Cohen Leads After Short Program

Published: February 21, 2006

TURIN, Italy (AP) -- Sassy Sasha Cohen saved the best for last. And boy was it good.

With U.S. flags waving and chants of "USA! USA!" rocking the arena, the U.S. champion dazzled the judges with a sensational short program Tuesday night and slipped past world champion Irina Slutskaya of Russia by a slim .03 points.

Sasha Cohen Falls Twice, but Wins Silver Medal

Thursday, February 23, 2006; 5:24 PM

TURIN, Italy, Feb. 23 On a night of mediocrity and meltdowns, Japanese figure skater Shizuka Arakawa skated a safe but strong program to win the women's Olympic figure skating gold medal.

U.S. figure skater Sasha Cohen, who led by three-hundredths of a point at the start of the night, skated first among the top skaters and essentially collapsed. She fell hard once and put two hands down on another attempted triple jump, but her night was salvaged when Russian Irina Slutskaya ended the night with a mistake-filled skate.

'Just another day on a stormy race course': Mancuso wins giant slalom

SESTRIERE, Italy (AP) -- Julia Mancuso never knew what this felt like. To win a major race, or even to lead after the first run.

And yet the 21-year-old Californian knew exactly what this felt like. To launch herself into the kind of whitewash of dense fog and driving snow that enveloped the Olympic giant slalom course Friday.

So she shut out the unknown and focused on the familiar. Her reward: A gold medal, the first for U.S. women in Alpine skiing since 1998 and their first medal of any color at these games.

Olympics End With Sparkle for Italians but Not for Everyone

Published: February 26, 2006

TURIN, Italy, Feb. 26 — In the end, the weather turned sparkling again — just as it had been for the opening ceremony — and Turin bid goodbye today to an Olympics that finally seemed popular at home even as it got mixed reviews from its visitors from around the world.

The Winter Games in Turin ended with a circus-like celebration full of clowns and acrobats.

The International Olympic Committee president, Jacques Rogge, struck an upbeat note in his final news conference and called the Games "truly magnificent" in his address at the closing ceremony. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi of Italy attended the two-hour gala at the Olympic stadium though he had skipped the opening, a move that seemed to reflect Italy's less-than-enthusiastic attitude toward its Games. The energy picked up in the city as the Games wore on. Organizers said more than 900,000 tickets were sold, for 90 percent of the Games' capacity. The medals plaza in Piazza Castello became a festive gathering spot and revelers filled the arcaded streets of downtown Turin.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
