John Lennon's Death Lingers for Witnesses

NEW YORK - A television news producer. An emergency room doctor. Two NYPD beat cops. Before that December night 25 years ago, they shared little but this: As children of the '60s, the soundtrack of their lives came courtesy of the Beatles.

As the article mentions, I was one of the millions who first heard the horrible news of Lennon's death while watching Monday Night football on TV. If I thought seeing John Lennon interviewed by Howard Cosell on Monday Night football in the 1970's was surrealistic, hearing the buffoonish Cosell announce Lennon's death in 1980 was the most unbelievable gut-shot I've ever received...the impact of his words literally knocked the breath out of me. I'll never forget that moment.

I heard about it at UCLA in the student union - its felt like a bad dream at the time - I didnt quite think it was real. Who would want to murder a Beatle?

You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
