Abbey Road Studios opens to public

March 21, 2005

The Abbey Road Studios in London, where the Beatles recorded most of their hits, has opened its doors to the public for the first time.

The opening is part of a 16-day film festival to celebrate the 25th anniversary of film-recording at the studios.

In the late 60s, the Beatles named their eponymous final album, Abbey Road, after the studios, the cover of which famously features the four pop singers strolling across a zebra crossing............

I walked across that very zebra crossing! To bad Abbey Road wasn't open to the public when I was there in 2001, that would have been awesome to see!!

very cool mate...what a feeling to have walked across the actual crossing..that`s what precious memories are made of........ :) :)

It was pretty cool!! One of the friends that was with me took a picture, but she didn't zoom in and we (the other friend I was with is from England and we were visiting her family that still lives over there) look to far away! Oh well, at least you can tell what road we were on. I would love to do that again sometime :)

this reminds me of how innocent and naive (and somewhat hopeful) things seemed back then.

I know, and a LOT of them have British accents!!  I have a thing for British accents!

moodyblue, the new zealand accent is very similar to the british accent, depending what region in england you`re talking about.....its a very BBC news announcer type of accent, but more neutral sounding....not as poncey.....

The American deep south accent has always been considered very suave and David Nivin-ish, as well.....

for some reason, the further south you go the nz accent slows down slightly, developing a noticeable twang and dare i say it, a noticeable southern drawl..nz is made up of 2 major islands, north and south island..they both loathe each other..south islanders call northerners J.A.F.A`s (" just another fucking aucklander "..auckland is the largest city in nz and is in the north)......they like glocks down south as well ......is it the same everywhere??......i live in the north east of the north island... :o:lol:

LONDON, England -- Abbey Road studio, where the Beatles recorded almost all their music, attracts tens of thousands of fans each year.

They come from across the world to worship at the place where it all began. They photograph the famous pedestrian crossing outside, and most of them write their name on the walls. But they couldn't go in.

Until now.

Through April 3, Abbey Road is opening its doors to the public for the first time since it opened in 1931. To celebrate 25 years of movie scoring, begun when John Williams led the London Symphony Orchestra through his soundtrack to "Raiders of the Lost Ark," the studio is holding its own film festival.

Only movies whose music was recorded at Abbey Road are featured, starting with the Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night" and finishing with "A Yellow Submarine."

The immense Studio One, which can accommodate a full 120-piece orchestra, has been converted into a 350-seat cinema, and the smaller Studio Two contains an evocative exhibition of photographs of stars who recorded there, from Bing Crosby to Fred Astaire to Bette Davis.

David Holley, managing director of the EMI Studios Group, which owns Abbey Road, says that letting the public in was overdue.

"We think 100,000 people annually write their names on the walls outside. We clean them off every few weeks. It's a tradition we like, however," Holley says. "It started in 1980 when John Lennon died. Many people congregated outside and an engineer played 'Imagine' out the window."

Many try to enter the studios, and Holley says the receptionist has found a thousand ways to say no. "But we thought, with the 25th anniversary of our first film-score recording, that we would celebrate by letting people see where all that great music was made," he says.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
