'Britain home to 200 terrorists'

Reuters, AFP

March 07, 2005

UP to 200 "Osama bin Laden-trained terrorists" are on the streets of Britain, determined to carry out mass attacks, the country's former top police officer has warned.

Sir John Stevens, who retired as London Metropolitan Police chief last month, said it would be "madness" to free foreigners held under an anti-terrorism law that Britain's highest judges have ruled illegal.

With an election expected in May, British Prime Minister Tony Blair is trying to pass new anti-terrorism measures, which would allow house arrest without charge, before the old measures expire on March 14.

The old law, enacted in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the US, allows foreigners to be held indefinitely without charge. But the Law Lords ruled last year that such powers violated basic rights.....

Yep, you can tell that an election is on it's way:(

And who exactly is standing up to him slum? Not even the opposition party is. Just some back benchers and the LibDems. That aint going to stop his reign of BS.

The worst part is what it does. I was talking to my gran a few days ago. Poor women isn't hardened to todays media. I've had to explain to her in the past that the whole country isn't unemployed, which she thought everyone must be as the news only ever reports closures.

Now the poor women is scared shitless of terrorists. It took me a good 30mins to explain that there is no such thing beyond a tiny little group who dont have the funding or skills anyway.

All the years she lived in London while the IRA where bombing the crap out of it (and the Germans for that matter!) without fear. We have caught one islamic extremist, who was too thick to take a lighter to light the bomb in his shoe. Then we have locked up a few more who look like they might be muslim. Thank god Blair is in power to protect us.

Poor women. thumbsdown

MI, i can't pretend to understand the political system here but i do know that i've read (more than a few times) MPs or whatever standing up to blair and wanting to drag his ass out for the no WMD leading up to the Iraq war. having said that, i sympathise w/your poor gran--these anti-terrorist fucks have done their work well.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
