U.S. students say press freedoms go too far

Mon Jan 31, 7:20 AM ET

By Greg Toppo, USA TODAY

One in three U.S. high school students say the press ought to be more restricted, and even more say the government should approve newspaper stories before readers see them, according to a survey being released today.

The survey of 112,003 students finds that 36% believe newspapers should get "government approval" of stories before publishing; 51% say they should be able to publish freely; 13% have no opinion.

112,003

Is this a sample? The entire population of a specific institution? University of Connecticut perhaps (they don't state that the "student" number comes from there)? If this was a sample, was it random? Convenient? Stratified?

What SPECIFICLY was the first of the apparent two survey questions? Was said question "leaded"?

Asked whether the press enjoys "too much freedom," not enough or about the right amount

This is a closed question with only three options and a slight lead of the question. That's a bad way to conduct a survey using standard "good" statistics methods.

However, the fact that ANYONE thinks the government should be able to "approve" media stories is scary. The main purpose of the media is to keep the government in check. You don't take a balance, and then hand control of one of the balances to the other entity.

Duh. I thought this was common sense, but apparently there are some very stupid doormats out there. They'd be a perfect fit for a totalitarian state.

insights on the realities of leaving a bit down in article: 'One option is to leave the US. Unless you're on the no-fly list you should think carefully before doing so - leaving your support network is often a mistake, Americans are going to be unpopular in many places and really, nowhere's not going to get hit, though some places will get hit less. If you do decide to leave there are basically two options - 1st World and 3rd. If you have decent but not great assets, and can liquidate them then living in the 3rd world has the advantage of being cheap...'

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
