Suggestions for Catchy, Witty, Jazz and Blues

Recommended Posts

Hi,

New here.....

I'm looking for some good female jazz and blues songs that really catch the listener's ear, preferably witty, catchy, funny, or over the top dramatic.

Some examples of what i'm looking for would be:

Song from The color purple feat Tata Vega - Miss Celie's Blues (sista)

http://mfile.akamai.com/3171/rm/muze.downl....ram?obj=v40809

Ruth Brown - If I can't Sell It, I'm gonna keep sittin' on it

http://mfile.akamai.com/3171/rm/muze.downl....ram?obj=v10212

Alberta Hunter - My handyman ain't handy no more

http://mfile.akamai.com/3171/rm/muze.downl....ram?obj=v50103

Mable John - Your good thing (is about to end)

http://mfile.akamai.com/3171/rm/muze.downl....ram?obj=v10314

If you know any songs that sound like these, please let me know

any help appreciated...

Thanks

Welcome to Beatking, Cougar. Loved those tunes. I think I'm gonna refer your question to Kooperman, Umma and Nate, our resident specialists in this area....

First thing I'd reccommend is to find some compilations by Billie Holiday. She's one of the all time greats. Something newer that you might like would be the movie soundtrack from Chicago. Queen Latifah is very impressive on that. I'll let others give their opinions to balance it out.

And welcome to BeatKing!

Thanks for the welcome and help guys...

I do like Latifa's "Mama" song on the Chicago Soundtrack :)

I'll listen to Billie Holiday's stuff too....

While doing some more searching, I found some others which are in this same type of style i'm looking for:

Katie Melua - My Aphrodisiac is you

http://mfile.akamai.com/3171/rm/muze.downl....ram?obj=v40816

Lorraine Ellison - Stay With Me

http://mfile.akamai.com/3171/rm/muze.downl....ram?obj=v40712

Please keep 'em coming if y'all find anything else....

Thanks,

always appreciated

love Norah method:

Well, I tried the AllAboutJazz web site with the same question and got only two replies.....not a very helpful group. <_>

Anywayz, I found a cool web site that has good suggestions on artists that I've never heard of before, which is exactly what I like

Hope this helps those who are always on the hunt for something new:

That looks something that should be added to the soundtrack forum. Thanx...

Also, you might want to check out some of Ricki Lee Jones stuff at her website, and some early Janis Joplin :)

Good One, thanks. :good job: I like her Dreamland CD and the song called "Muddy Water."

I found another artist too:

Her name is Jennifer Barber. I think she is half Hawaiian. Anywayz, I like the songs "no swimmin" and "you gotta know how."

She kinda sounds like Norah Jones to me:

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
