EYES OFF THE PRIZE

The landmark documentary Eyes on the Prize cannot be screened at a public school:

'The teacher who was planning a February 8th screening of Eyes on the Prize in Vienna, VA for students and community members has been forced to cancel after a threat of lawsuit from the "licensee level". We absolutely cannot believe this - we had never anticipated that anyone would try to stop students and community members from watching a film about the Civil Rights Movement. Apparently, the law firm that contacted them says that the school district does not have the proper licenses....'

What kind of licences does a school district need to play a film? Isnt it handled like a straight rental?

I don't need to see this, because I don't have to look at it to know the message.

The "message" is already a part of who I am. I don't need to reaffirm myself.

I personally think humanity spends too much time dwelling on the messages of the past, rather than already having it as part of who they are after a reasonable learning period of it.

Some among us (a smaller amount than you think) are racist failures, and now we must forego extra time that can be spent on......say........math in favor of Black History Month studies (they're making my little brother write reports....yes, with an S. Multiple reports on MLK). The public school system around here is absolute shit. Math and English scores are horrible. Standardized test scores confirm this. They have even graded on a curve.

What's more important about the MLK type message is for the PARENTS to pass on the rationalization of tolerance. That's the message; simply recognizing that people are always going to be human under their skin, and that there are common goals among humans that transcend culture and race. The idea of inferiority and hate simply has to be eliminated with logic at a young age.

It has to be obvious, and then you won’t really need to educate people with Black History Month. It can stick to just being a memorial; letting kids learn things they desperately need to succeed in a society that demands they know things like math.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
