Hey Tom Petty Fans,

Im interning at Universal and I just found out that the entire Tom Petty catalog on MCA records is now available on Napster!!! Petty has always been a supporter of cheaper music and Napster can get you songs for only a buck!!! Reply back with your thoughts on Petty's albums.

I agree with Dude. Petty is one of the rock legends in my mind. I even think it's cool that somebody was bright enough to offer his entire catalog. He's someone I've always been willing to shell out to hear.

But...

    1. $1/song is too much for my taste. No offense to Petty, because as mentioned above he's pretty cool, but his stuff is usually findable in the bargain bins.
    2. He has been one of the stars to speak out against p2p. If I thought that record sales even accounted for 1/3 of his income I'd understand, but I don't think it does. The classic rockers seem far more adept at profiting from touring than album sales. P2P seems more likely to keep the guy's music in people's minds than he may think.

Hey,

In terms of getting Tom Petty's albums in Bargain bins instead of at a dollar/song, you should know that entire albums on iTunes are only $9.99. That's cheaper than your average $14.00 CD at a CD store. So, downloading an entire album is a bargain

I still buy albums that my favorite artists, such as Van Morrison, Fleetwood Mac, etc., put out. Probably I still buy a good percentage of what I would have bought before the p2p era started. Anything else I get, I wouldn't have ordinarily bought.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
