  5. MetroActive interviews Lou Reed: SO I'M on the phone, talking to Lou Reed about the moment in rock history when feedback was invented. My music- nerd needles are in the red, as you can imagine. My synapses are firing in rapid succession. I've reached some kind of rock-fan nirvana. We're throwing out names of the '50s rockers who claim to be the guy who accidentally punched a hole his amp, thus creating the first electric-guitar distortion. The late Paul Burlison from Johnny Burnette's trio made the claim to me personally one night over drinks that it was him, on the road, with a pencil. There have been many others; I mention that Dick Dale is one of the suspects, as well. Reed scoffs. "Not Dick Dale. That's just surf music." "I know," I say. "But I think he claims to be the one." "Well, he can say what he wants," Reed replies, "but you hear it on 'Rumble.' Link Wray, there's no mistaking that sound. But it's true, a lot of people say they were the one who put a hole in the amp. That would make a great research contest." Read More

VISTA, California: The largest skateboard ramp in the world can be found on a 12-acre farm north of San Diego among the green foothills of the San Marcos Mountains. ...Approximately 360 feet long, the ramp height reaches 75 feet at its apex. Here are the lyrics, courtesy of Lyrics Freak: Pedro lives out of the wilshire hotel He looks out a window without glass The walls are made of cardboard, newspapers on his feet His father beats him cause hes too tired to beg Hes got 9 brothers and sisters Theyre brought up on their knees Its hard to run when a coat hanger beats you on the thighs Pedro dreams of being older and killing the old man But thats a slim chance hes going to the boulevard Hes going to end up, on the dirty boulevard Hes going out, to the dirty boulevard Hes going down, to the dirty boulevard This room cost 2,000 dollars a month You can believe it man its true Somewhere a landlords laughing till he wets his pants No one here dreams of being a doctor or a lawyer or anything They dream of dealing on the dirty boulevard Give me your hungry, your tired your poor Ill piss on em Thats what the statue of bigotry says Your poor huddled masses, lets club em to death And get it over with and just dump em on the boulevard Get to end up, on the dirty boulevard Going out, to the dirty boulevard Hes going down, on the dirty boulevard Going out Outside its a bright night Theres an opera at lincoln center Movie stars arrive by limousine The klieg lights shoot up over the skyline of manhattan But the lights are out on the mean streets A small kid stands by the lincoln tunnel Hes selling plastic roses for a buck The traffics backed up to 39th street The tv whores are calling the cops out for a suck And back at the wilshire, pedro sits there dreaming Hes found a book on magic in a garbage can He looks at the pictures and stares at the cracked ceiling At the count of 3 he says, I hope I can disappear And fly fly away, from this dirty boulevard I want to fly, from dirty boulevard I want to fly, from dirty boulevard I want to fly-fly-fly-fly, from dirty boulevard I want to fly away I want to fly Fly, fly away I want to fly Fly-fly away (fly a-) Fly-fly-fly (-way, ooohhh...) Fly-fly away (I want to fly-fly away) Fly away (I want to fly, wow-woh, no, fly away)

  17. Coffee reduces risk of type 2 diabetes NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Coffee drinkers have a substantially lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than people who abstain from the beverage, a new study shows. This "striking" protective effect was seen in former coffee drinkers as well, Besa Smith and co-investigators at the University of California San Diego in La Jolla report. "The growing body of literature definitely suggests strongly...that there is something there," she told Reuters Health in an interview. Just what that something is isn't clear, but it's probably not caffeine, she said, because the effect has also been observed with decaffeinated coffee. Read more at Yahoo News
