  1. There’s no question that shoegaze is currently going through a revival. Even before kids on TikTok discovered it, the genre was resurgent thanks to a wave of exciting young bands and reunions by some of its pioneering legends. Luckily for shoegaze fans both new and old, some of the women from the original ’90s era are either still in active bands or making music on their own. We checked in with three of them. 2. For decades, the eclectic California ska-punk band Fishbone has operated as a model of sustainability. Musicians have come and gone from Fishbone’s lineup, but the band’s creative core — singer Angelo Moore and bassist Norwood Fisher — has remained consistent since the band started in 1979. Now, that creative core has broken down. Norwood Fisher and founding trumpeter “Dirty” Walter Kibby are no longer members of Fishbone, and Fisher is taking legal action against his former bandmates. We’ve heard the album’s closing track “Prologue” and the André 3000 collaboration “Dream State” from it so far, and today Washington is sharing one last single. “Get Lit” features George Clinton and D Smoke. 6. You might have thought we left crypto in 2023 but Eminem has just been announced at the new spokesman for Crypto.com, even after a bunch of celebrities were charged with boosting crypto assets without disclosing payment. Eminem is taking over the gig from Matt Damon, who appeared in a Crypto.com ad in 2022 with the slogan “Fortune Favors The Brave”; that tagline was recycled for a new advertisement that Eminem narrates, which he posted to Twitter a couple days ago. The ad debuted on-air during Saturday’s Lakers NBA playoff game at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. View the full article
  7. Enlarge / Intel's top-end i9-14900KS. (credit: Intel) Earlier this month, we wrote that some of Intel's recent high-end Core i9 and Core i7 processors had been crashing and exhibiting other weird issues in some games and that Intel was investigating the cause. An Intel statement obtained by Igor's Lab suggests that Intel's investigation is wrapping up, and the company is pointing squarely in the direction of enthusiast motherboard makers that are turning up power limits and disabling safeguards to try to wring a little more performance out of the processors. "While the root cause has not yet been identified, Intel has observed the majority of reports of this issue are from users with unlocked/overclock capable motherboards," the statement reads. "Intel has observed 600/700 Series chipset boards often set BIOS defaults to disable thermal and power delivery safeguards designed to limit processor exposure to sustained periods of high voltage and frequency." 10. We’re not exactly suffering from a drought of new shoegaze records; the genre is arguably bigger now than it’s ever been. But even amidst the current glut, I’d advise you to spend a little time with the new record from Bliss Fields, the Toronto band that was formerly known as Iris. Bliss Fields released their full-length debut Slowly, Forever two years ago, and they’ve just followed it with a really strong new self-titled EP. View the full article

  15. In 1979, two little kids in Los Angeles started a punk band. When Redd Kross started, Jeff McDonald was 15, and his brother Steven was 11. Their first gig was opening for Black Flag, and they’ve remained a band ever since. (Originally, they were the Tourists, then Red Cross, and finally Red Kross.) In the past 45 years, Redd Kross have put out some great records and perfected their own sound, a glammy, punk-infused, pop-culture-obsessed form of power pop. This year, for the band’s 45th anniversary, they’re going big, with a memoir, a documentary, and a new self-titled double album. View the full article
