  8. Los Angeles — Sharon Osbourne says she cut Iron Maiden's power during a concert on this summer's Ozzfest tour. The wife of rock icon Ozzy Osbourne has accused the heavy metal group's singer Bruce Dickinson of badmouthing her husband on stage. “Dickinson got what he deserved,” Osbourne wrote in a letter to the group's manager. “Was Dickinson so naive to think that I was going to let him get away with talking about my family night after night?” During the same show in Devore earlier this month, Iron Maiden's members were pelted with eggs and debris from the crowd. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto.../Entertainment/

  15. Playboy plans to launch a digital version of its magazine next month, allowing readers to download over the Web the same content that's in the print version. Readers will be able to subscribe to the online version starting with the October issue. They will also be able to purchase single copies of the digital magazine. The company expects the digital magazine to appeal to a growing number of readers accustomed to consuming media online, particularly men between the ages of 18 and 34. "There is a new generation of readers emerging, and advertising dollars are following--so expanding our online offerings makes sense," said Playboy spokeswoman Lauren Melone via e-mail. Appealing to Internet advertisers, whose clout is growing, is also part of the equation. The company plans to incorporate ad-sponsored links in its new online product. http://news.com.com/Playboy+to+launch+digi...ml?tag=nefd.top
  16. A new MSN Messenger worm often talks to people in their own tongue as it hunts for new victims, security experts have warned. The worm, dubbed Kelvir.HI, tailors the language of its attack message to the compromised system, said David Jaros, the director of product marketing at security vendor Akonix Systems, on Wednesday. It can send messages in English, Dutch, French, German, Greek (English alphabet), Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, Spanish and Turkish, he noted. "It appears to check which language the Windows client is configured to use," he said. "This is the first time that we have seen a worm that checks the system settings and then sends a specific message." When it hits an English system, the worm sends out the following message: "haha i found your picture!" The message is sent to everybody on a user's contacts list. The message includes a Web link that when clicked on will download malicious software that installs a backdoor and furthers the spread of the worm, Jaros said. http://news.com.com/IM+worm+speaks+your+la...ml?tag=nefd.top
  17. Microsoft has signed a deal with two film studios to make a movie based on its popular space-based video game series "Halo," a spokesman for Universal Pictures said Wednesday. Universal and Twentieth Century Fox agreed to pay Microsoft $5 million plus a percentage of movie ticket sales. The total price being paid is capped at 10 percent of domestic box office receipts. The deal ends months of speculation over which studio would win the right to make a "Halo" film, which came to Hollywood last spring highly touted by Microsoft and its representatives at Creative Artists Agency. Messengers delivered a script to the studios wearing costumes and toting laser guns. But several studios balked at an initially high asking price, which at the time published reports pegged at $15 million plus 15 percent of box office receipts in the United States and Canada. Under terms of the final agreement, Universal will oversee the film's production and domestic distribution, while Fox will handle international distribution. http://news.com.com/Microsoft+signs+movie+...ml?tag=nefd.top
  18. In its fight with Microsoft over an executive's defection, Google has enlisted attorneys from a small but high-powered law firm. Kekar & Van Nest, a 50-lawyer firm based in San Francisco, represented Grokster it its legal battle over file sharing, and also represented Wall Street banker Frank Quattrone and former Enron leader Andrew Fastow in criminal cases. The firm specializes in "complex civil and criminal litigation," according to its Web site, and was judged "litigation boutique of the year" earlier this year by The American Lawyer trade publication. Court filings made public Wednesday show Google requested that five attorneys from Kekar & Van Nest join its legal team. The requests, filed Aug. 16, were approved by the court. The addition of the Kekar & Van Nest attorneys is a further sign of the high stakes in the battle over former Microsoft executive Kai-Fu Lee. Google hired Lee last month to lead a new research-and-development center in China and serve as president of its Chinese operations. The same day, Microsoft sued both Lee and Google. Microsoft claims that Lee's new job violates a one-year noncompete clause, which bars him from doing work competitive with projects he worked on at Microsoft. http://news.com.com/Google+taps+legal+musc...ml?tag=nefd.top
  19. The recently discovered Zotob and Esbot Internet worms need only slight modifications to attack computers running the Windows XP operating system, security experts at Symantec Security Response said Wednesday. The threats, which exploit a Microsoft Windows Plug and Play service vulnerability to create a back door on the computer system and allow remote attackers unauthorized access, were originally aimed at the Windows 2000 operating system. Symantec has not yet seen any worm that has been configured to attack Windows XP, but said the possibility of adapting the worm to the newer XP operating system arose during a detailed analysis of the worms and the vulnerability. It would apply to the Windows XP and Windows XP with Service Pack 1 systems, but not to Windows XP systems with Service Pack 2 installed. http://www.globetechnology.com/servlet/sto...ory/Technology/
  20. NEW YORK — U.S. Providers of Internet-based phone services may be forced next week to cut off tens of thousands of customers who haven't formally acknowledged that they understand the problems they may encounter dialling 911 in an emergency. The Federal Communications Commission, the U.S. regulatory agency, had set the Monday deadline as an interim safeguard while providers of Internet calling, also known as VoIP for Voice over Internet Protocol, rush to comply with an FCC order requiring full emergency 911 capabilities by late November. Vonage Holdings Corp., the biggest VoIP carrier with more than 800,000 subscribers, told The Associated Press Wednesday that 96 per cent of its customer base have responded to the company's notices about 911 risks. But that still means as many as 31,000 accounts would need to be shut off as early as Tuesday. http://www.globetechnology.com/servlet/sto...ory/Technology/

  22. SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc. is set to introduce its own instant messaging system, the Los Angeles Times reported on Tuesday, marking the expansion by the Web search leader into text and also voice communications. Citing unnamed sources "familiar with the service," the Los Angeles Times said that Google's Instant Messaging program would be called Google Talk and could be launched as early as Wednesday. Google Talk goes beyond text-based instant messaging using a computer keyboard to let users hold voice conversations with other computer users, the newspaper quoted a source as saying. http://today.reuters.com/news/NewsArticle....ESSAGING-DC.XML They are saying as early as tomorrow this could be launched.
