  1. CLICK ON FLYER FOR TICKETS If you like your house music sounding like disco played at a dub reggae night then Discolexia is the night for you. Padded Cell makes a rare live appearance with house leg-end Maurice Fulton getting up on the ones and twos with NZ's dub-disco don Atlantic Conveyor. Richard Sen and Neil Beatnik are not normal people. Having won notoriety as a Bronx Dog (Heavenly) and a Dirty Beatnik (Wall of Sound) respectively, Padded Cell came about in 2002, partly as a response to the conservatism of early millennium dance music but also to act as a conduit through which they could conduct and realize their most outlandish ideas. A shared history as club deejays and producers means that even the most mind bending elements of their sound are conducted through dance floor focused channels; disco breaks and rolling percussion combining with menacing synth work outs, electro sensibilities and live instrumentation to create an unholy brew that has been described variously as ‘dark-disco', ‘goth-disco-rock', and perhaps most tellingly of all, ‘devils-disco'. When the 4 labels you have attached to your name are Tiger sushi, Warp, Output and Sonar Kollektiv, as a producer, you are definitely doing something right. Maurice Fulton has the pleasure of affiliated with all four, and as a Sheffield lad who's made his name in the American Disco scene and who now lives down under, he pretty much done it all. A legend on underground house and leftfield scene, he has literally been to every party ever, and so knows how to turn one out with his eyes closed. The Atlantic Conveyor was a British Navy Merchant ship, registered in Liverpool, that was requisitioned during the Falklands War and sunk... oh sod you Wikipedia, you're rubbish. The only Atlantic Conveyor you need to know about is the dub disco NZ connection kind of Atlantic Conveyor. They are Disco, Dub and Hip Hop in one. Ever since Steven Tripp and Tubbs dropped the Fantastic Incidents EP in 2004, there has been a grass roots swell of support for these London based producers. "Nasty Things" and "We Are" received support from DJ's as diverse as Gilles Peterson, Groove Armada and Zane Lowe. http://www.myspace.com/paddedcelldc http://www.myspace.com/mauricefulton http://www.myspace.com/atlanticconveyor http://www.cargo-london.com/event.php?id=1063 WeGotTickets // Ticketweb // Cargo Shop 8-3 £10 ADV, £12 LIVE: PADDED CELL DJS: MAURICE FULTON + ATLANTIC CONVEYOR + RICHARD SEN
  2. CLICK ON FLYER FOR TICKETS Musician and composer Jimi Tenor has never settled for the traditional role of a pop artist. He is known as a productive musician whose work lies beyond current trends, and also as a performer who combines the finest elements of afro-american music, spontaneous silliness and shameless glamour in an original way. Jimi Tenor will grace Cargo's stage with his presence on this, the third instalment ofthe excelent "Karen P presents... Broad Casting" night. Besides being a professional musician for almost 20 years, Jimi Tenor (born Lassi Lehto, 1965, Lahti, Finland) has also practised photography, directed short films and designed clothes and musical instruments. The electro-mechanic instruments built by Jimi Tenor and designer Matti Knaapi are not intended to be pieces of art on display at exhibitions, though have sometimes ended up as such. They emerge from musical needs, and are mainly made of scrap material. The instruments have been used at full blast during recording and on stage, so some of them have been wrecked. The music industry has found it difficult to operate with Jimi Tenor at times. The hard rock driven Finland of the 80s considered him weird and too marginal. In Britain in the 90s he was seen as a trendy techno jazz artist, but Tenor soon confused the pioneering electro label Warp by delivering an imaginary - and expensive - soundtrack album with a symphony orchestra, instead of making minimalistic hits. Today Jimi Tenor is an established European artist who operates outside the mainstream. His audience consists of clubbers and alternative rock enthusiasts looking for new perspective, but also of jazz and funk rebels. Those who understand that even unconventional pop music can move your body and heart. The Broad Casting night will be recorded especially for Red Bull Music Academy Radio. It will fit snugly amongst an archive of music from the most iconoclastic DJs & musicians of our time. Left-field, underground, contemporary, genre-crossing; RBMA Radio is Karen’s biggest project since leaving ‘Worldwide’. www.rbmaradio.com Ticketweb We Got Tickets 7-1 £15 adv LIVE: JIMI TENOR + ANDREYA TRIANA DJ: KAREN P
  3. CLICK ON FLYER FOR TICKETS The loveGods started out as a duo performing acoustic sets in a small basement venue in Brighton 3 years ago. The duo became a four piece and grew to be Brighton's biggest independent band. Moving from delicate fragility to fiery intensity, The loveGods entertain and captivate from the moment they get on stage. Who would have thought that a rock band, would one day, be inspired by this 16th century philosopher and essay writer, contemporary and disciple of Montaigne. And yet, La Boétie, the band, composed of Elsa Fourlon (singer - electric guitar), Julien Decoret (chorus - bass) and Raphael Chassin (chorus - drums), has everything to claim the unsubdued and protestor heritage of the author of "Discours de la servitude volontaire": same desire to escape from the standard, the formats, the established codes. Same disrespectful attitude towards the polished world of "young" music, whose rebellious postures resemble today a publicity for a hairspray brand (for clean hair). It's about rock, energy, rhythmic pulsations, badly combed guitars, bass that bangs on your plexus, and drums which won't let you go. La Boétie is not a tranquil band. La Boétie - the philosopher and the band - is a salutary engagement for free creation. After collaborating in projects with Bang Gang, Basement Jaxx, True Stories, Ernest Saint Laurent, zero dB, and Nouvelle Vague, singer-songwriter Phoebe Killdeer has now produced a solo album of extremes and contrasts. Fragility and introspection are comfortably married to an exuberant barrage of rock, blues and soul in a debut record that is startling in its accomplishment. Tribal, dark and cinematographic, it could possibly be the soundtrack for a Tarantino film Marc Collin is a genuine "French touch" figure, influenced by the early '80's post-punk music which gives him his edge. He moves from movie soundtracks to club music, and has become a creative and eclectic producer. Nouvelle Vague pushed his career into the limelight after the unanticipated worldwide success. myspace.com/thelovegods myspace.com/laboetie myspace.com/phoebekilldeer myspace.com/twofortheroad1 myspace.com/nouvellevague WeGotTickets // Ticketweb // Cargo Shop 7-1 £5 LIVE: LOVEGODS + LA BOETIE + PHOEBE KILDEER & THE SHORT STRAWS DJ: MARC COLLIN (NOUVELLE VAGUE)

  5. Inspired by a series of fantastic compilations on Sonar Kollektiv a new night is born! Karen P has had a huge impact on the world of radio and provided a much-needed platform to an incredibly talented pool of musicians and performers from all over the world. From her work with Gilles Peterson on Worldwide to the creation and production of the groundbreaking underground radio station, Red Bull Music Academy Radio and now her string of excitingly fresh podcasts have set her up as a hugely influential tastemaker in the scene. The Observer recently hand-picked Karen as one of the brightest and best rising stars in her field by naming her in the Top 10 of the media category for the ‘Future 500’ recognising the movers and shakers of the future. Tonight we celebrate the launch of her new monthly night with a little tribute to Peacefrog Records (www.peacefrog.com). Responsible for hundreds of stand-out releases scaling many genres; tonight we present two exclusive performances representing their past and present, showing just how much they have achieved in their 17 years. All the way from Sweden and already making waves with their excellent self-titled debut album, Little Dragon pay an exclusive visit to the UK. Fresh from a tour with Jose Gonzalez, they bring a similar approach to their music as their compatriot and label-mate, offering up compelling, wintry melodies that soothe, bewitch and beguile. www.little-dragon.se Now into his second decade as a true innovator in the electronic music scene, Charles Webster (Miso/Peacefrog) is one of the few real mould-breakers in an increasingly stale & predictable dance music world (though whether a man whose favourite artist is Rickie Lee Jones, and whose records ooze such soul and depth should really ever be pigeonholed as dance is another debate...). Charles has sold over 100,000 albums without ever being considered 'mainstream' or having had a major hit single. For the opening night of Karen P presents… “Broad Casting” Charles Webster has prepared a special laptop set with some very special guests. Expect the unexpected! The Broad Casting night will be recorded especially for Red Bull Music Academy Radio. It will fit snugly amongst an archive of music from the most iconoclastic DJs & musicians of our time. Left-field, underground, contemporary, genre-crossing; RBMA Radio is Karen’s biggest project since leaving ‘Worldwide’. http://www.cargo-london.com/event.php?id=1049
  6. Quantic flies into Cargo for his exclusive London residency, serving another hot ladel full of spicy Colombian Soup. Joining Mr Holland in his heady broth is NYC's Pimps of Joytime, signed to Nickodemus' Wonderwheel Recordings, this trio offer up latin soul with a massive wodge of funk thrown on top of it, slowly melting into the El Mondongo and adding a creamy after taste to the soup. Grubs up! NYC Native Brian J returned in 2004 after a stint in California to leave his legend as The Pimps of Joytime. The three years between then and now have resulted in High Steppin, an exceptional blend of so many qualities of the city that it's challenging to know where to even begin. With a collection of superb guests, including percussionist/vocalist Cyril Neville and Radio Mundial frontman Jean Shepherd, The Pimps of Joytime are selling some serious soul. Each second of these sixty-two minutes drips and bleeds with such enthusiasm and passion that it's impossible not to get pulled into the dance. After you emerge for the first time, it will be you that sends yourself, again and again, into its grip. For more information and tickets click here

In Chagall Illuminated, animators, including BAFTA-award winning Asaf Agranit and Your Mum, unleash a landscape in which the Stetl in Vitebsk metamorphoses into a rainbow hued metropolis populated with floating lovers and falling fiddlers, donkeys, dogs and cats... Napoleon Maddox is a rare and undefinable talent - beatboxer, rapper, singer, songwriter, teacher and broadcaster. He's worked with Karsh Kale, Burnt Sugar, Hamid Drake and Roy Nathanson, and creates a wildly original mix of hip hop acoustic jazz, from Duke Ellington to Outkast. Featuring avant-jazz hero, the World Saxophone Quartet's Oliver Lake, his band Is What?! is provocative music for today. 9. Every now and then an album drops in our office that is so good and constantly on the office record player that we all have to arm-wrestle to find out who liked the LP first ... This week the superb "Our Lives Are Too Short" by Sonar Kollektiv's Outlines has been the album under contention. It's simply brilliant, soulful hip hop with production so clean, tight and well French that F&F just had to get them. A change in the billing isn't all that bad. Ohhhh... If that aint enough we got the almighty beat diggers that go by the name of Kon & Amir, these guys are the heat and rock parties the world over. Their new mix on the mighty BBE is crazily good... Go check... 'Off Track' (BBE). Buy Tickets Here Cargo's Listings
  10. Alice Russell is pretty much the voice of the naughties for soulful hip hop laden jazz. If there's one female vocalist who's come to the fore in the past couple of years it's Surrey Born Ms. Russell. Alice grew up in an environment where she was constantly surrounded by music, and went on to follow her gut instincts and natural talents to pursue a career as a vocalist. Her father was an organist and this combined with her experience of singing in various choirs ensued her with a classical background, which proved pivotal for her choice of career. Info & tickets

  13. The mighty Kocani Orkestar are among the funkiest exponents of the Balkan brass band style which is found across ex-Yugoslavia and is a direct descendent of the music once played by Turkish army bands. They come from the city of Kocani, in the new Republic Of Macedonia. Their music is based on Gypsy tunes from various parts of the Balkans and on Turkish/Bulgarian rhythms, with a sprinkle of Latin flavour...A powerful rhythm section (Tapan, Darbuka, baritone & tuba) which rocks like a mutant Balkan funk band wailing, passionate soloists (sax, trumpets) which go to soaring heights these & other elements of their trademark thundering style have made The Original Kocani Orkestar one of the best-liked Gypsy bands in Europe and the US. Artists such as Cibelle, Beirut and Balkan Beat Box count among their fans (and are known to sometime cover some of their songs).Ticket Info
