  1. Friends & Family ft. Daedelus this Saturday @ Cargo !!
  2. A+R @ Cargo, 30/05/2009 For info and tickets, click on flyer. AplusR is the newest adventure by the people who brought to you the groundbreaking parties Nylo and Map. I.e. the same people who brought to the UK the likes of Theophilus London and the BLK JKS for the very first time. It is with this spirit of discovery that they've invited Maluca over from NYC for their latest party at Cargo. Maluca, recently signed to the infamous Mad Decent records draws inspiration from her Nuyorican roots but makes uncompromising dance music aimed squarely at the dancefloor - think a Dominican born Thunderheist and you're getting there -. Following in the footsteps of Buraka Som Sistema or M.I.A, Maluca embraces the rhythms and melodies ingrainded in her cultural heritage and adds an unhealthy dose of BASS to create an intoxicating musical cocktail that is both heavy and refreshing at the same time. Already singled out by the Midas-like Diplo, who will be producing her first 12" on Mad Decent, Maluca only has one way to go: up; and if you happen to cross her path here is only one thing to do: shake it! Man about town Martelo will land at Cargo having just toured with Toddla-T and Oneman. With a myriad productions and remixes under his belt for the likes of Santogold, Riva Starr, Mumdance or Hervé to name just a few, Martelo has a proven record as a Bassline specialist of the highest order, and his sets flow seamlessly from dancehall to b-more to fidget via hip Hop and Dubstep and anything else in between. Dope ish! Isa GT is a Colombian born member of Girlcore, the all-girl dj collective that has been destroying London's East End with their riotous mashup parties. A budding producer, Isa Gt has been championing the Funketa sound, a fierce mix of the Colombian dance Champeta and Brazil's percussion heavy Baile Funk. Her first release - Pela'o - has been remixed by Crookers, and she is now working on a track with the Zombie Disco Squad so she clearly knows what she's doing! Last but not least, the in-demand Work it! djs will be warming hips and toes from the dj booth with their Boom-Bap-a-licious 90's hip hop selections that have earned them coveted invitations to play at Q-Tip's after-party and to host their own Bloc Party at the ICA. Boom Bap yo! LIVE: MALUCA DJS: MARTELO + ISA GT + WORK IT! DJS 8-3 £10 adv, £6 b4 9, £12 otd
  3. Free Fridays @ Cargo, 8/05/2009 Info, click on the flyer. Poni Hoax is a five man army of «jeunes gens modernes», bookworm musicians and extremely talented composers signed to ace Parisian imprint Tigersushi. Their lead vocalist, Nicolas Ker tackles an ambitious and unique style that walks the thin line between a decadent Morrissey or an elegiac Jim Morrisson. www.myspace.com/ponihoax Violens are a New York-via-Miami four-piece formed in the fall of 2007 featuring members Iddo Arad (synths/vocals), Ben Brantley (bass), Jorge Elbrecht (lead vocals/guitar) and Kris King (drums). Their music imagines a place where The Zombies & The Byrds meet Wire & The Violent Femmes, and Crass meets Angelo Badalamenti & Prefab Sprout. We don't like to say this, but this time we are fully justified. These guys are going to blow up, so this is a rare chance to catch them in an intimate venue. www.myspace.com/violens Last but not least, we have Wolf Gang, whose song Lions in Cages has been on repeat at Cargo HQ for a while. Check here to see why: www.myspace.com/thisiswolfgang Djs in support are Stef from the Klaxons with a late night set and Wonky Pop resident Goldierocks. www.myspace.com/klaxons www.myspace.com/djgoldierocks LIVE: PONI HOAX + VIOLENS + WOLF GANG DJS: STEF (KLAXONS) + GOLDIEROCKS 6-3 FREE ENTRY

  5. Free Fridays Tropical Party @ Cargo, 01/05/2009 For more info, click on flyer. Yes, yes, we are banking on the sun coming out for this. We know. We shouldn't. But we are still going to do it. A tropical party it is. Bwoy! The party starts early as The Garden festival crew invite Domu and El Harvo to play tunes in Cargo's yard. You know the score: lots of seating, cocktail specials, BBQ, and now with added table football and vintage photobooth. At 9 the party moves inside where Banjo or Freakout strats off proceedings at a slow but hypnotising and utterly rewarding pace. We are massive fans of Alessio Natalizia: not only did he have the balls to cover Burial's Archangel, but he also did it in style; and the rest of his output is just as good if not better. Tonight Banjo... brings his one man show to Cargo for the first time and we just know it won't be the last. www.myspace.com/banjoorfreakout As the sun sets outside, inside we turn the heat dial up to 11. It's the turn of the Souljazz Orchestra to take the stage. The SJO are Canada's finest JazzFunk ensemble and never fail to get the crowd dancing. Even in London. Expect a fiery delivery of some rightgeous Afrobeat and Tropical percussive numbers by one of the tightest bands on the planet. www.myspace.com/souljazzorchestra As a fitting finale to the party The Heatwave rock up with a bag full of the hottest Bashment and Dancehall. www.myspace.com/heatwavelondon The Free Friday Tropical Party is Part 1 of a one-off Free Weekender. Part 2 will see Various Production, Geeneus and Wookie headlining the FACT party, whilst Part 3 sees M.E.N. , and Mock & Toof in a Modular Records special. All 3 nights are FREE. 6. Modular Records’ Recession Party @ Cargo, 3/05/09 For more info, click on flyer. The old saying goes ‘there's no such thing as a free lunch' so it's lucky we aren't in the catering business as it would seem there is such a thing as a free party and we'll prove it! On May 3rd we launch the aptly titled ‘Recession' a totally gratis party to be held at the magnificent Cargo every first Sunday of the month throughout summer-that's 5 whole parties for the price of none!!! Jesus how do we do it! Talk about a gift horse!! Festivities kick off in the Cargo courtyard at 4pm where our very own White Fang and Bushpig Modular DJ's plus Russian Vogue and Love Magazine's ‘Magwich' take to the decks with a mash up of summer sun tracks meets Malibu mansion knees up. Keep hydrated with one of the many drinks specials on offer then wait for the sun to set before winding your way into the venue where you should be prepared to be assaulted (in a good way) by party purveyors du jour ‘Work It' who'll be body slamming your senses with their classic hip hop, dancehall, old school RnB set- think of the best house party you've ever been to with a selection of the best songs you haven't thought of since you were 15 and you know you're experiencing ‘Work It!' No chance to catch your breath as Queens Of Noize (Smash and Grab/BBC 6 music) take the reigns with an anything goes set. If a DJ set could be a punk rock show then these girls would have the market cornered with their method to the madness showdown. JD Samson of Le Tigre fame steps it up next for her first appearance of the night under the guise of DJ before taking to the stage with new project MEN in a live show which resembles sun beams and rainbows taking on a human form to play disco pop electronica exploding in your face like a prism museum on the hottest day of the year! With your hands in the air and memories of credit crunch and winter slipping away like a melting ice cream you'll be ready for easy on the eye Jacques Renault . Spinning the vibe onto a whole new trajectory, this NYC stalwart and BFF to numerous achingly hip labels like DFA and Italians Do It Better will be throwing out an expertly put together audio tutorial of the highest calibre of classic disco and italo. Dream weaving standard. Rounding off the night London producers and DJ'sMock and Toof seal the deal with one of their ever sublime sets and having shot to attention with astounding remixes for the likes of The Juan Maclean, Scissor Sisters, Gomma, Hot Chip and Maps you know you can expect to hear some exclusive tracks from muso royalty. Advisable to get there early grab a spot near the barbeque and have a rifle through the Modular jumble sale where you can get your hands on all kinds of ridiculous goodies from the entire Modular back catalogue for bargain bin prices and with cheap drinks flowing all night this party literally drop kicks the economy. 17. Live Boutique Festival – 24 & 25/3/3/09 - Cargo Ticket and Info, click on flyer for details LiveBoutique.com is exporting French artists. A group of French producers launches the LiveBoutique.com Festival's first edition and presents two thematic nights : the French World scene on Tuesday 24th March with El Hadj N'Diaye, Soha, Titi Robin. On Wednesday 25th March, the French Pop/Electo Scene with Yodelice, The Fugitive Kind and DuOud. Tuesday 24th March LIVE: TITI ROBIN + EL HADJ N'DIAYE + SOHA More info here Wednesday 25th March LIVE: YODELICE + DUOUD + THE FUGITIVE KIND More info here Tuesday 24th March Titi Robin is a self-taught musician born at the end of the Fifties in the West of France. He built his personal musical universe by borrowing instinctively from various musical sources: India, North Africa, his two main sources of influence being the Gypsy and Eastern cultures. El Hadj N'Diaye is a singer of « texts », a teller of songs. In the wake of daily-life poets, memorialists and philosophers, this committed bard is a voice that emerges, boiling over, from its sole subject: reality. His are never just soft « ballads »: they sting in places. Their sobriety is bound to a sentinel, an implacable inner voice in a state of alert. Soha's limpid vocals also offer many different shades, as does her music, which is a delicate mixture of sun-kissed sounds that evoke in turn reggae, jazz, Cap Verde, Cuba. Wednesday 25th March Yodelice is Maxim Nucci's alter ego, his second self . The french musician and producer went to LA to record " Tree of life " ( to be relased April 09 on Mercury/Universal ), with the help of top local musicians such as Abraham Laboriel ( Mc Cartney, Clapton...) on drums, and Beck's horn section . The result is a clever production with catchy folk/pop songs wrapped in an elegant twilight atmosphere, where you can feel influences of Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, David Crosby, JJ Cale, America... After the highly acclaimed Wild Serenade and Sakat recorded with some musicians from the Yemen, the two fellow musicians Smadj and Mehdi Haddab, Duoud, return to their original formula of the duo. Hovering between tradition and futurism, with varying moods ranging from surf kitsch to contemporary groove, they bring the oud right up to datewith dance and modernity. Four years after the second album of his band, Overhead, Nicolas Leroux, a.k.a. The Fugitive Kind offers us « Stone Age ». With its cinematic and haunted feel, the influences here are subtly blended, and if he still loves Talk Talk, The Cure, David Sylvain or PJ Harvey, this very personal « Stone Age » shows new horizons, from My Bloody Valentine to Kate Bush, the Cocteau Twins or Joni Mitchell, as well as the inevitableScott Walker. 18. Click on flyer for more info Cargo's Free Fridays follow a simple premise. Put on great music, open the doors wide open, and people will stream in. And my goodness is it working! It's been roadblock after roadblock after roadblock... and the last Friday of January will be no exception as everyone's favourite guilty pleasure, Max Tundra, curates an evening of idiosyncratic electro-pop fun! Max Tundra is a talented multi-instrumental musician, singer and music producer. He grew up taking classical piano lessons but realised he much preferred the music from TV adverts and shows. He eventually bought a Commodore Amiga 500 and began exploring the realms of electronic music, and hasn't looked back. Other than his full-length albums, he has also done remix work for bands of varying genres including Franz Ferdinand, Architecture in Helsinki, Kid606 and the Pet Shop Boys. 20jazzfunkgreats describe Ben Butler & Mouse Pad thus: "Ben Butler & Mouse Pad continue speeding down the luminescent neon lanes of a chromatically over-stimulated utopia, we would be hard-pressed to find music so simultaneously epic and good-humoured anywhere else in the vast swathes of land which we behold from our tower of old comic-books ad discarded technology"; and who are we to disagree? No one, that's who. Lidl Richard's style is, well, rather effed up. Exploring the previously uncharted territory that lies between Rockabilly & Chiptune music, Lidl Richard's live show is one you will remember for a very long time. Pete Um has a gentler approach, but still exudes originality and a good dose of wackiness into his song writing and electro-blues compositions. The night will be rounded off by G£nuin£ Guy and Silverlink on the decks, who will be dropping Bmore & Electro Rave bombs on Cargo's dancefloor like it's going out of style! LIVE: MAX TUNDRA + BEN BUTLER & MOUSE PAD + LIDL RICHARD + PETE UM DJS: G£NUIN£ GUY + SILVERLINK 8-3 FREE ENTRY

Blasting into the new year Brighton three piece The Qemists raise sonic standards with their heady amalgamation of drum n bass beats spliced viciously with searing rock effects. Reaching inception originally as a rock outfit, the trio generate plaudits for their bombastic DJ sets and have championed respect from veritable primates of the D'n'B kingdom: Mampi Swift, Andy C and many more. Firing on all cylinders, this is their debut tour as a live unit (finishing off with two headline dates in Japan where the album is knocking on the door of the top 40 over there!). Commemorating the release of their debut LP 'Join the Q', prepare to be disarmed by live guitars, raw drums and amplified bass from the 3 Qemists; the brute force of this being yoked together by the vocal stylings of Jenna G + live MC! Expounding guttural bass-loops funnelled through crashing guitar chords, its no wonder that The Qemists have garnered approval from heavyweight rockers Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) and Faith No More's Mike Patton, who also makes a guest appearance on the LP. So buckle up and prepare for a crash course in futuristic beats at breakneck speeds...blink and you'll miss something! LIVE: THE QEMISTS DJS: CLIPZ + KING CANNIBAL + EDDY TEMPLE MORRIS 7-1, £8 adv, more on the door
  20. Click on flyer for more info In 2009 Broad Casting will be a quarterly event built around unique artist-led collaborations kicking off with this month's pairing of Tony Allen and The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Fela Kuti once said that without Tony Allen he'd need four drummers at once. Of course, the style we know as afro-beat wouldn't sound anything like it without him. A true intuitive pioneer, Tony Allen managed to mix the brevity and snap of jazz drumming by the likes of Art Blakey, Max Roach, and Guy Warren, with the deep extended forms of African rhythms from highlife, Yoruba, and Ghana. Still flipping poly-rhythms today, Tony's involvement with Damon Albarn, and label Honest Jon's has brought his talent to a mainstream audience via The Good The Bad and The Queen whilst he still continues to write and record his own music, and collaborate with a diverse range of musicians - from rapper Ty to French man of mystery Sebastien Tellier and now of course The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.... The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is an instrumental group comprised of 8 horn players and a drummer. All 8 of the horn players are sons of jazz musician Kelan Phil Cohran (who played trumpet in Sun Ra's Arkestra). Originally formed as a band of street performers in Chicago IL, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are currently based in New York City where and have played and recorded with artists such as Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Maxwell and of course Phil Cohran. We are thrilled that they will be performing for us in advance of the spring release of their debut album for Honest Jons. Witnessing these guys pack the Cargo stage with Tony Allen doubling their rhythm section is not an opportunity to be missed!! Not content with one legendary drummer on the premises, our DJ support tonight comes courtesy of Malcolm Catto who is no stranger to Cargo - his band The Heliocentrics having collaborated with Mulatu Astatke for what is already a legendary live Broad Casting show. Each Broad Casting event is recorded especially for Red Bull Music Academy Radio. LIVE: TONY ALLEN & THE HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE + THE MIGHTY JEDDO DJS: MALCOM CATTO + KAREN P 7-1 £9 adv
