  5. Click on image for tickets or here to see the video spot. They say if you can make it in New York and London you CAN make it anywhere. These two cities have the midas touch when it comes to dream catching only the top prize in new music to then filter out to the rest of the planet. Just call NYC and LDN the Ellis Island(s) for universal musical migrations. The August episode of NYC/LDN* explores the globalization of the modern day freedom song by reaching as far deep as the townships of South Africa to introduce the exclusive debut performance of BLK JKS. While continuing to weave the tale of two cities, NYC/LDN marshals a few enchalant tastemakers by the likes of Phil Asher (restless soul), DJ Reborn (Ubiquita NYC), and Patchwork Pirates (Thugs N Hugs) to help set Cargo's brick house on fire. Plus to add a savory new element to the NyLO experience, Dante's Fried Chicken (NYC) will be curating a NYC inspired street food menu in tribute to the August talent line up. The second installation of NYC/LDN grants headlining entry to South African next "real" sensation BLK JKS. Already garnering accolades from media heavyweights both in Europe and the U.S., BLK JKS has taken a fresh approach to creating a forthcoming pandemic sound. Past iconic rock emancipators from Led Zepplin to Robert Nester Marley lend inspiration to this guitar slaying foursome in addition to their personal narrations of growing up in and out of a divided nation. Their November 2007 debut release of Lakeside 10' vinyl sold out within its first week at Rough Trade. BLK JKS are featured both in the July issue of Dazed & Confused, and the Observer Music Monthly. Their latest ep "Mystery" is now out at the finest music shops worldwide. Phil Asher is the impresario of West London sound. As founding member of restless soul label, Phil and his comrades have taken the soulful dance sound past its W1 cosmopolitian post code. Phil's knack of creating a continuum for keeping bodies giddy has kept die hard followers anticipating every new release he puts out, including those on the restless soul imprint. His upcoming album "Phlash and Friends" released on Archive Records in September features guest includes Dego, Rich Medina, Ommas from Sa Ra, and Benji B. His musical diversity ranges from being one of the pioneers of the legendary broken beat club night CO-OP to resident dj of Soul Heaven. Phil will be bringing more of that West meets East sound to Cargo in August where he will be spinning all of his trademark selections of "quality timeless music with big production." DJ Reborn is not like any other female dj you have ever heard before. This Brooklyn based fly girl has been lacerating dance floors across America for past decade while intimidating many of her more veteran male peers. DJ Reborn musical versatility and enduring reputation is what makes her one of New York's most respected and sought after talents. She has been called to share stages and drop her heavy mixes of hip hop, reggae, house and afrobeat with some of today's best in live performers including The Roots, Common, Talib Kweli and Ms. Lauryn Hill. Reborn also happens to make up one third of super sexy dj collective, Ubiquita, who have been throwing crazy affairs in the Lower East Side for the past five years running. Its good to see that bass has a mighty fine London agent in Patchwork Pirates. The Pirates dedication to the "stop start flavors" and hissy cymbals that are rooted in the vibrations of booty bass and baltimore club, is what makes their sets pump up the jams. For two years running their internationally branded party Thugs N Hugs has roll call the likes of progressive bass heads including Sinden (London), Toddla T (Sheffield), and Team Canada DJs (Montreal). Chicken never tasted this good. New York's culinarian pop idol Dante Gonzales variety show/house party "Dante's Fried Chicken" is aiming to strip KFC red stripes with the help of his music celebrity best friends - M.I.A., SantoGold, and Spank Rock. Dante takes his family's traditional southern American recipes and upgrades them to an even more delicious, NYC approved healthier versions. The secret ingredient to his success is that he dips all that soul food into a mix with a few hot under/overground music steppers (see above) who cook with him and perform to a feast of hungry music fans. The Cargo street cafe is handing over their kitchen for ONE NIGHT ONLY to NYC/LDN to have Dante cook up a special menu lovingly inspired by the guest performers of the night. LIVE: BLK JKS DJS: PHIL ASHER + DJ REBORN + PATCHWORK PIRATES 8-3 £10 adv, £6 before 9, £12 after

  10. CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS Some describe Babylon Circus as the French version of Gogol Bordello, thanks to their sonic madness and stage antics. Their music is infused with touches of Django Reinhart, Balkan Gypsy music, and great French singers like Edith Piaf or Jacques Brel. Bob Marley is also inescapably present. Their eclectic fusion picks up where French alternative rock band Mano Negra left off, both bands touring extensively in their quest for social justice. "Dances of Resistance", their last album, carries a message of optimism in a world that offers little hope. In the style of musical warriors like The Clash and sonic rebels like Jimi Hendrix, Babylon Circus use the power of the microphone to address social and political issues, providing an alternative view of what the official line claims is our reality. But their music is also a call to put your wallflower days behind and join the dance. Lead singer David Baruchel says the music of Babylon Circus is a "way to fight, to be active in today's society rather than a victim".

  15. Tiombe Lockhart came onto the independent scene as integral part of Platinum Pied Pipers debut cd Triple P (Ubiquity Records). On the success of PPP, Tiombe swept acclaim and worldwide nominations for her sultry and jazzy vocals on highlighted album cuts "Stay with Me" and "I Got You." Tiombe has since taken a departure from the hip hop drums in pursuit of darker sonic tales of the New York Underworld. Tiombe's writing and production work on her recent release "Queen of Doom" shows that her genre-bending range is a perfect reflection of what it is to be a youthful, complicated soul in today's times. 2008 has been declared the year of the Mohawke. Hudson Mohawke first appeared on the turntablist scene as being the youngest UK DMC finalist at age 11. A few play-stations and Jay Dilla albums later, Hudson's grown up composition mixes "Atari 8-bit crunch with math-rock, baltimore - club, and crunk hypy bounce" all encompassing that Glasgow hip hop stamp of approval. His sound being so futuristic and bionic made super label Warp Records run to scoop Hudson Mo as their newest signing. A new album on Warp is set to be released this year along with few other solo projects under the umbrella of Heralds of Change. Nwachukwu (pronounced Wah-Chu-Ku) can be best described as a musical maverick. Many will know him as the producer, beat programmer and keyboard player of Attica Blues; who apart from releasing two groundbreaking albums blueprint (Mo'Wax) and Test Don't Test (Sony/Higher Ground) extended their talents as re-mixers to artists as diverse as Macy Gray, U.N.K.L.E, Duran Duran, DJ Krush, Jazzanova, and Ben Folds. Nwachukwu and his company Nepa Ventures have recently turned there attention to creating a innovative monthly club series - CDR Sessions, which serves as a conduit for burgeoning producers who seek a platform to showcase their work in progress to an audience of new music fans. Since Sucio Smash has taken the helm of hosting New York's much loved hip hop show Squeeze Radio, he has continued to break ground within the city's music scene as did his predecessors from before - NY icons Bobbito Garcia, Stretch Armstrong, and Lord Sear. "The Squeeze Radio Show" has been rated several years running as NYC best hip hop show with a pod-cast that reaches a greater scope of the international music heads. Along with discovering and presenting new music within the old, Sucio has taken his taste making skills to form a new label, High Water Music, which will be releasing new albums this year by DJ Spinna, Sadat X, Sputnik Brown and Fresh Daily.
  16. CLICK ON FLYER FOR TICKETS Mad Mats’ now legendary Raw Fusion club (and record label) have provided its devoted audience in Stockholm with the best underground rhythms since 1996. Essentially, it’s not about a particular style of music but an overall feeling! With a sublime blend of top international DJ’s and new up and coming talents, the club night has hosted more than 150 guest DJ’s and bands such as Carl Craig, Jay Dee aka J Dilla, Gilles Peterson, Peanut Butter Wolf, Theo Parrish, Jazzanova, Peter Kruder, Kyoto Jazz Massive, The Roots, Gil Scott Heron, Bugz In The Attic, Roni Size, Waajeed, Louie Vega, Spacek etc etc. And three years in a row, the WMC/Miami parties these guys are held responsible for have been magical, and much talked about. Yes, the Swedes know how to throw a good party which they’ve proven twice before when they were hosts at Cargo. Last time around the club was packed, so to avoid disappointment, get down there early… The London touch down at Cargo on May 23rd includes resident DJ’s Mad Mats and Simbad with homeboy Yungun aka Essa on the mic, and all the way from Detroit USA - John Arnold and Jeremy Ellis aka Ayro with a blinding LIVE set. This is promised to be something rather spectacular. Their performance at Co-op’s WMC party was one of the best moments of the whole week. Check the Youtube links out below and you’ll know what you can expect!
  17. Le Peuple de l'Herbe are one of the most promising new bands from the France's musical scene. Their style is impossible to pigeonhole but if you had to give them a genre it'd be Jungle, hip-hop, funk, ragga, house, dub, break-beat and drum'n'bass. Their 2000 debut ‘Triple Zero' was met to critical acclaim and has sold over 40,000 copies worldwide, despite being considered a cult underground act. Their new album should propel Le Peuple De L'Herbe onto the international scene. An extensive touring schedule is kicking of with a string of live dates in France before moving onto the festival stages throughout Europe and stopping through Cargo. Don't miss it. In support are the Asteroids Galaxy Tour. The Asteroids Galaxy Tour are musicians on a mission. They are Danes dedicated to taking pop technicolour, having funk get down with folk and forcing old soul to shake its booty to disco and dub beats. If you think their name is intriguing, wait until you hear the tunes. Formed less than a year ago, The Asteroids Galaxy Tour are heading for fame at a speed even they didn't expect. Their debut gig saw them support Amy Winehouse at the biggest venue in their native Copenhagen, at the special request of the British singer's management. In London, a demo found its way to industry veterans David Enthoven and Tim Clark, who have managed the careers of T-Rex, Roxy Music and Robbie Williams. Within half an hour of hearing it, Enthoven was on the phone to band founder Lars Iversen. Within days, he was on his way to Copenhagen to thrash out a deal. Don't miss it! 19. CLICK ON FLYER FOR TICKETS As the second instalment of the Discolexia series, Atlantic Conveyor welcomes the 21st century's answer to Grace Jones in the guise of Ebony Bones, who plays live alongside The Invisible, a supergroup trio recently tagged for the "hottest record in the world" by the tastemaker at Radio 1 Zane Lowe. In fact both these bands have won the plaudit of "hottest record in the world" on Mr Lowe's show.So we felt it only right that we bring the man himself down to DJ under his post punk/disco alias New Chef.? Sweet! Let's look at these bands in more detail shall we? Take the outer space elements of Kelis and the ferocity of Spektrum and the slickness of Grace Jones, the DIY punkiness of x-ray specs and the party party noise of Basement Jaxx and you only start to get half way close to the sound and feel of Miss Ebony Bones. With Singles like "We Know All About You" and "Don't Fart On My Heart" she's been worming her way under people?s skin for sometime now and now plans to make tracks to get into your head. The Invisible is the critically acclaimed new outfit from Dave Okumu, Tom Herbert and Leo Taylor.
