1. We knew that 3-D re-releases of the second two "Star Wars" prequels were on their way. We just didn't know they would hit theaters so close together. After the first installment of the post-converted 3-D trilogy, "Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace" managed to earn $102 million worldwide during its run in February of this year, Fox bumped up its already-planned follow-ups. "Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones" will open in 3-D on September 20, 2013, going up against "Rush" starring Chris Hemsworth and directed by Ron Howard. "Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith" opens a little while after on October 11, 2013. Will you be checking out the second two "Star Wars" prequels when they open in 3-D? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter! View the full article
2. By Carter Maness While the domestic dust-up between Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson and Evelyn Lozada has already caused it's share of subsequent damage, including stitches, divorce proceedings and the likely end of Johnson's professional football career, Johnson's NFL buddy Warren Sapp has come to his defense. In a recent interview, Sapp accused Lazada of being the aggressor in the fight that led to her apparent head-butting and Johnson's arrest for assault. Sapp, a fellow Miami native, insinuated that holes in Lazada's story imply that the public doesn't know the full details. "When is the last time one of your homeboys called you and told you, 'Let me tell you about this fight at the club last night where this guy and his girlfriend were walking by and he turned around and head-butted the girl.' Never," he said. "He's taking the rap for it. We don't do that. She did it." Sapp continued on the attack, essentially calling Lazada an empty, petty woman who depends purely on looks to get ahead in the world. "That's a woman that is going to depend on her beauty for the rest of her life to open any door she wants to walk through," he said. "And she's going to do what to her forehead? I'm done. [Chad] is a bunch of fun and I am sorry this had to happen to him." Late last week, the "Basketball Wives" star was seen in public for the first time since the incident. She was wearing a hat, which covered her forehead almost entirely. Johnson, who hasn't exactly fought back after the arrest, has already lost his job with the Miami Dolphins, a television gig and an endorsement with Zico coconut water. His termination from the Dolphins was depicted on the HBO's documentary series "Hard Knocks." 3. It's difficult to say that anyone "won" the box office this weekend. Saturday and Sunday was a typical, late-August dead zone for new releases, all of which fell short of the sums put up by last week's debuts. "The Expendables 2" added $13.5 million to its total, which now sits at $52.3 million, significantly below where it's predecessor was after its second weekend. "The Bourne Legacy," "ParaNorman," "The Campaign," and "The Dark Knight Rises" rounded up out the top ten. It isn't until the 7 spot that we see a new release. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's "Premium Rush" crossed the finish line with just $6.3 million, barely beating out the conservative documentary "2016 Obama's America," which has stunned analysts. The week's other two releases, "Hit and Run" and "The Apparition," came in at 10th and 12th respectively, both taking in less than $5 million. 4. By Kara Warner with reporting by Felicia Morris Game and his longtime girlfriend Tiffney Cambridge abruptly called off their engagement in July, just a few weeks shy of their approaching wedding date, but the Compton rapper says he and Cambridge are still working things out. The couple has been on a roller-coaster ride of emotional ups and downs in their relationship in the last year. Back in October, Game made headlines when he staged an elaborate proposal at Cambridge's workplace, Frank D. Parent Elementary School in Inglewood, California, where he happily admitted he was throwing away his "player card" and ready to be a family man. Nine months later, the couple unexpectedly called off their pending nuptials. The wedding was canceled along with reported plans to build a reality show around their big day. The Game himself took the blame for "not being man enough to see it through." Now it seems as though there might be a happy ending in the works after all. When MTV News caught up with Game on Friday (August 24), he said he and Cambridge are working things out. "The engagement, as of right now, you know what? We're just working on us," he told us from the Northridge, California, set of the music video shoot for "Celebration" (featuring Lil Wayne, Tyga, Wiz Khalifa and Chris Brown). "We're working on the family aspect, working on getting stronger as friends and trying to build a foundation and not so worried about a day or paperwork or a ring or food or flowers. [We're] just working on us, because that's the thing about it — with relationships, not even marriage — both people, everything has to be weighed evenly, or it's not going to work, so we've got work to do." 6. Brits living overseas always appreciate reminders of their former home, such as a refreshing cup of PG Tips tea or access to a morning paper. But for countless expats being able to watch a UK-produced TV show is the thing that makes them feel most at home, if only for a few minutes each week. For almost a decade, Brits everywhere have been accessing UK TV programming via one of the Internet’s longest-standing torrent sites. Founded in 2003, UKNova was created to enable people to see programs they would not normally be able to watch, either due to geographical restrictions or an inability to watch during the alloted broadcast time. Going much further than most torrent sites, UKNova has a published set of ethical guidelines designed to protect the revenue streams of companies who make money from DVD sales and premium channels. But the existence of this code clearly means nothing to the big corporations behind FACT, the Federation Against Copyright Theft. “UKNova is being forced to change. We have been issued with a ‘cease and desist’ order by FACT (The Federation Against Copyright Theft),” the site’s operators said in an announcement last evening. “We got the [cease and desist] which quoted FACT’s remit and a list of member Companies,” a site admin told TorrentFreak. “There was one very big UK satellite provider some of whose content (a tiny percentage from their basic package) was available on UKN, there was also a football production company. The remaining members represent post-transmission marketing of DVDs etc. The major UK TV companies are not FACT members and were not mentioned.” UKNova did not name the FACT members quoted in the cease and desist, but the only satellite TV provider counted as a FACT member is Rupert Murdoch’s BSkyB. The only football company is the Premier League. Once UKNova were aware that these two companies wanted their content removed, the site acted immediately. “We immediately removed the alleged offending links to content that could be [connected to] the two companies and replied to FACT assuring them of our cooperation in the matter, but asking them to point out examples of potentially offending links,” a UKNova admin told us. “ALL links or access to content provided by UKNova are infringing, unless you can prove that you have obtained explicit permission from the copyright holder for that content,” was FACT’s response. As touched on earlier, UKNova has strict rules about what cannot be uploaded to the site. They maintain a large “Not Allowed List” which details TV shows that are being exploited commercially on DVD, premium TV or pay-per-view, and are therefore banned from UKNova. “UKNova has always prided itself in avoiding damage to [rightsholder] revenue streams. For this reason any show that is released to DVD is not allowed and coverage of running series was often stopped before the end due to imminent DVD release,” TorrentFreak was told. “Similarly we have never allowed PPV shows or content from premium pay channels, nor do we even allow references to where to obtain commercially available material without paying in our forums. This has stood us in good stead over the years and previously we have had next to no complaints; those that we have had were quickly settled with the copyright holders.” Today, however, the highly-valued UKNova tracking service will be shut down, and it is difficult to fault the tough decision taken by the site’s operators. The very public four-year sentence handed to SurfTheChannel owner Anton Vickerman this month will not have gone unnoticed. “The people who run UKNova have families, careers and professional reputations that could be menaced by lengthy legal proceedings, whether successful or not. Whilst we believe that FACT are wrong both legally and morally on account of the strong ‘no commercial content’ stance that we have always taken, we are not in a position to be able to risk lengthy and costly court battles to prove this,” a site admin told us. “It is a sad day when a site whose mission has always been to bring much-missed UK TV to ex-pats and Anglophiles at the four corners of the world is forced to stop this activity. Nobody will be plugging a huge revenue hole because we are gone, but tens of thousands of avid viewers will suffer.” UKNova’s forum community will continue but its users will source their TV shows from elsewhere, on sites such as The Pirate Bay that couldn’t care less about rightsholder revenue streams. 17. Do you remember when Napster came around twelve years ago, and everybody said the digital copyright wars would be replaced by a new equilibrium? Today we can easily observe that this hasn’t happened. We’re in exactly the same positions today as we were a decade ago. As I was talking on this debate panel, representatives of the (obsolete) middlemen repeated two themes over and over: “we have rights, we have rights, we have rights” and “we need more time to adjust, we need more time”. The latter was quite easily defused by asking “So… you demand that the world must wait for you to catch up with it?”, whereas the former will probably be heard for another forty years. People who think they have the moral right to control what other people discuss, transmit, use, and copy simply are not going to abandon that point of view. They will assert that right as superior to any civil liberty, forever. Anybody who is able to adapt by reading the dead-obvious writing on the wall has already done so. Those who religiously keep repeating the same mantra today as they did a decade ago will keep doing so. In other words, we’re pretty much stuck with the copyright monopoly pundits and maximalists we have today for the rest of their natural lives. Of course, this doesn’t include the masses of people who merely have a casual interest in the copyright monopoly. But it does include those who were schooled in the wonders of monopolies twenty or thirty years ago, and have been working in a bubble protected from outside influences ever since then. Almost all the world’s new creators are already working in the new paradigm; creating despite the copyright monopoly, rather than because of it. So what I said to the “we have rights, we have rights” panelist was that they should be careful asserting rights given by law, for those laws can and will change as the 250 million Europeans who share culture come into power. 250 million people is not an adolescence problem; it is a power base of 250 million voters. As these people start writing laws, they can and will kill those monopolies at the stroke of a pen. So, sadly, it seems that a universal truth comes into play here: Viewpoints of society don’t change because people in society change. Viewpoints of society change because people defending the obsolete viewpoint die out. In other words, prepare for another forty years of corporate bullshit. 18. By Rob Markman You’d think a track featuring Kanye West, Busta Rhymes, Jadakiss and DJ Khaled would be a rap free-for-all, but Fat Joe rounded up some of the game’s most spirited spitters for something a little more subdued, then he got the all-star crew together again for a sexy video. On Sunday (August 26) Joe Crack premiered his “Pride N Joy” music video on MTV 2’s “Sucker Free” and the Hype Williams-directed clip did not disappoint. The song’s visual centers around a petite yet shapely model who the Don Cartagena showers with expensive gifts like a Rolls Royce Phantom and stylish Louboutin heels. Money is clearly not an object as Joe, Yeezy and the rest of the gang sing “And even if she all about the money I don’t really care,” in thug harmony. "We was all in there together and it was an ill vibe," the Terror Squad leader told MTV News in June, describing the scene in the studio. "We brought the microphone outside the studio and no Styrofoam [sound proofing] and everybody together just going in." Joe originally described the recording session as an A Tribe Called Quest/Native Tongues type vibe, but the video is much more sophisticated as Hype blends blue and purple-tinted hues making street-bred MCs like Jadakiss come off as a Romeo. Roscoe Dash and singer Miguel add an R&B vibe and help marry Crack’s rap bars to the piano-laden beat. Even Joe’s old “What’s Luv” collaborator Ashanti makes an appearance in curve-hugging, leopard-print pants, but Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) is noticeably absent. Simple and not over done, “Pride N Joy” is a clear continuation of the Fat Gangsta’s grown man vibe that he brought forth on his last single “Another Round” with Chris Brown. What a joyous occasion. What do you think of Fat Joe’s “Pride N Joy” video? Let us know in the comments! 23. When Demonoid went down at the end of July the site’s admin blamed a DDoS attack. This initial attack resulted in a series of problems that were not easy to fix. However, at the time the tech admin of the site was determined to get the site back online. “You know how it goes with Demonoid. It might take a while but it will come back,” the admin told us. The admin was referring to Demonoid’s reputation as the comeback kid, but a return became less likely during the weeks that followed. After being driven offline by a DDoS and suspected hacker attack, a few days later the news broke that Demonoid’s servers had been shutdown in the Ukraine. The action followed a request from Interpol, who assisted Mexican authorities in their criminal investigation into the BitTorrent tracker and its operators. With the site offline, Demonoid’s millions of members could no longer access the database of nearly 400,000 torrent files. Despite the serious legal issues, many of the site’s users haven’t given up hope that Demonoid will rise once again from its digital grave to make a blazing comeback. If it did, it wouldn’t be the first time. Over the years Demonoid has been blighted with more than its fair share of downtime. In June 2007 the site went offline after it was pressured to leave its host in the Netherlands, mainly because of legal threats from Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN. The site then relocated to Canada, but after threats from the CRIA it decided to shut down there as well. Early 2008 the site eventually reappeared in full glory after being offline for six months. In September 2009 the site went offline again due to hardware problems and subsequent data loss. The BitTorrent tracker eventually reappeared two months later around Christmas and continued business as usual. In the years that followed Demonoid regularly had outages of a day or two, sometimes citing DDoS attacks, but the site always reappeared. This time the situation is different though, as the Mexican authorities are determined to keep the site offline. It was previously confirmed that a criminal investigation is underway in the country and that a number of arrests and seizures have been carried out. These events may be the reason why many staffers decided to cut their ties with the site over the past year. So will Demonoid be able to make a comeback?
