7. By Maurice Bobb As part of his “facts only” interview circuit, Jay Z sat down with The Truth’s Elliot Wilson for an hour and touched on a litany of topics, including the “new rules” roll out for his Magna Carta Holy Grail LP, his creative process, fatherhood, Billboard and, of course, his thoughts on the controversial Trayvon Martin case. “I was really angry,” Jay said of George Zimmerman’s acquittal. “I didn’t sleep for two days. We all knew there was still a bit of racism in America, but for it to be so blatant was… if you just asked the questions, asked yourself the question, ‘Didn’t Trayvon have a right to stand his ground?’ He was being chased and he fought back.” Jay Z and Beyoncé both attended a protest of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” laws in New York City on Saturday (July 20), supporting Trayvon Martin’s family, who are still coping with the not guilty verdict that freed Zimmerman, who Hov referred to as a “mall cop.” “They’re funding George Zimmerman because they want to hold onto their guns, so the NRA… your mind can go so many places about why this verdict came down the way it came down, and we all know it was wrong. It was wrong! This guy’s not a professional,” Jay said. “First of all, you’re not a professional to profile someone. Professionals are taught not to profile someone. This guy’s a novice." "This guy’s a f---ing mall cop. You can’t assess a situation and figure out what you’re gonna do. That’s not what you do for a living. And even the law, that Stand Your Ground law. You can have a fight with someone and they’re running way, you can shoot them and kill them and you’re fine? What? Come on. Come on, man. Like someone’s robbing your house and they’re leaving and you can shoot them on the way out? They don’t [pose] a threat to you at that point. So how? How is that self defense?” In explaining the meaning behind MCHG’s “Somewhereinamerica,” the Roc Nation CEO touched on the incongruity of racism and the way today’s youth all listen to the same music. “It’s like, again, a reminder [that] we still got a long way to go. It’s beautiful, because this generation right now, they don’t see color in that way,” Jay said. “We’re a bit removed from those racist feelings because again, it’s hard to teach racism when your child is out [at] clubs. It’s integrated and the music we listen to is the same. Our feelings and our anxieties are more similar now. So you have hope that this generation don’t see racism that way, but you still see that that old guard — that whole thing that I’m fighting against — that old guard and their old ideas and their stubborn ways and all that ego and that bullsh-t is just still there, it still exists. You just hate to believe that.” Elsewhere in the interview, the “Picasso, Baby” MC touched on his competitive nature as a lyricist, despite his indisputably impressive discography, but did give props to up-and-comers like J. Cole and Drake. "I'm sure Cole thinks his album is better than mine, and I'm cool with that, he supposed to believe that, but there's a respect thing," Jay said. "Even Drake, we have a great relationship. I know he feels like, 'I'm the next one, I'm right here,' we hear the lines, 'feelin' like the throne is for the takin, watch me take it..' you know he's feeling it, it's cool, it wasn't meant with malice or disrespect, it's just like 'I'm comin, acknowledge my existence. He's definitely Kobe Bryant." As for Billboard not counting the first million units sold of MCHG because they were purchased in bulk by Samsung, Hov considers them “irrelevant” for not changing with the times. "They work for us," he said. "Their job is to encourage the business to bring in new revenue streams, not to discourage me." 13. Oh, directors and their wacky threats to quit filmmaking. We rarely believe them. Case in point: Kevin Smith. The loud and proud filmmaker announced that he finished a new script for a horror film he's calling "Tusk." The movie is currently in pre-production. "Tusk" started out as a joke on Smith's Smodcast series, but fans rallied to see the director bring it to life. Smith was inspired by a classified ad from a man searching for a lodger. The ad read: "To take on the position as my lodger you must be prepared to wear the walrus suit for approximately two hours each day (in practice, this is not two hours every day — I merely state it here so you are able to have a clear idea of the workload). Whilst in the walrus costume you must be a walrus — there must be no speaking in a human voice, and any communication must entail making utterances in the voice of a walrus." Pretty freaky, eh? Can we dub walrus horror a new genre? Fans of Smith's recent horror film Red State: are you digging this new project? Lost 'Wicker Man' Footage Finally Getting a Release Hugs to Nic Cage and Neil LaBute, but the 2006 remake of the Robin Hardy horror classic, "The Wicker Man," frankly, sucked. The original 1973 film centered on a police sergeant who investigates the disappearance of a young girl on an isolated island. Naked, crazy, pagan shenanigans take place, and our investigator finds himself trapped in a strange, new world. The original print was edited to bits, with different cuts popping up throughout the years. Through it all, some missing footage was left behind, but after a worldwide push to hunt it down, StudioCanal has come to the rescue. They'll be releasing an original cut of the film in theaters September 27 and on DVD and Blu-ray October 14. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the movie, which makes this news the best birthday present ever. Elijah Wood's 'Maniac' Is Officially a Banned Film The censors are at it again — this time taking aim at the remake of William Lustig's grimy slasher flick, "Maniac." Elijah Wood stars in the adaptation as the psychotic killer with a penchant for women's scalps. New Zealand’s Office of Film and Literature Classification has banned the movie, with the exception of film festival screenings and academic use. People are outraged, calling the ruling "an insult to the intelligence of the adult population of New Zealand." The original grindhouse classic shocked and appalled audiences during its release in 1980. New Trailer for Australian Horror Remake 'Patrick' A remake of the 1978 Aussie horror film "Patrick" will debut at the Melbourne International Film Festival this weekend. Twitch has a new trailer for the movie, about a sickly man who murdered his family and now controls those around him with psychokinetic powers. A young nurse falls prey to his killer instinct. We're glad they left the scene in the film where Patrick spits on the nurse — a move Quentin Tarantino "borrowed" for a scene in "Kill Bill." Abigail Breslin Joining Schwarzenegger in zombie movie 'Maggie'? Are you still trying to compose yourself over the news that Arnold Schwarzenegger will be starring in a zombie movie? Here's more scoop to get excited about: Abigail Breslin is currently in talks to join the former Governator in the movie "Maggie." The film is based on a Black List script from John Scott about a father (Arnie) and his daughter (Breslin) who escape a zombie virus that has spread throughout the country. Breslin has experience with the walking dead after starring in Ruben Fleischer's "Zombieland." Arnie, on the other hand, needs to brush up on the rules and practice his "double tap." Okay, so that's not actually a fun game at all, but it's really hard to not freak out, or at the very least swear off space travel, while watching these previews for Alfonso Cuarón's "Gravity," the third of which just appeared over at Warner Bros' YouTube channel. "Gravity" tells the story of two astronauts, played by Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, who live through a terrible accident during a space walk that sends them rolling through open space. The three recent previews have largely been single takes that play out over the course of a minute or so. The new preview, which chronologically comes after the first two, actually does feature cuts but has the same epic, unbroken feel of the others. 21. In hopes of steering prospective customers away from pirate sites, copyright holders are sending Google millions of DMCA takedown requests. To give the public insight into the scope and nature of this process, last year Google began publishing details of all takedown requests in their Transparency Report. Since then the number of URLs Google is being asked to remove has exploded. Adding up all the weekly numbers, we found that since January this year Google has been asked to remove over 105,300,000 links to infringing webpages. Today, most of these webpages fail to appear in Google’s search results. While the takedown requests appear to be leveling off a little, 100+ million URLs is already double the number Google processed for the whole of 2012. The graph below shows the surge in takedown requests. DMCA URL takedown requests per week Looking at the websites for which Google received the most takedown notices over the past year, we see that the file-hosting search engine FilesTube tops the rankings with 5,801,661 URLs, followed by Torrentz.eu and Rapidgator.net with 2,508,595 and 2,166,977 URLs respectively. Perhaps surprisingly, global piracy icon The Pirate Bay is not featured in the top 20. This is partly because it switched domain names on a few occasions, and also because it hosts ‘only’ two million magnet links on the site. Moving on to the reporting groups, we see that the RIAA is one of the most active senders of DMCA takedown requests. The music group has sent takedown requests for more than 26 million URLs since Google started counting. While Google responds swiftly, the RIAA doesn’t believe the takedowns are very effective so they are now asking Google to start banning entire domains from its search results. “Every day produces more results and there is no end in sight. We are using a bucket to deal with an ocean of illegal downloading,” Brad Buckles, RIAA executive vice president of anti-piracy complained earlier. Google, on the other hand, is happy with the way things are going. The company previously told TorrentFreak that it has faith in the general workings of the DMCA takedown procedure. “We believe that the time-tested ‘notice-and-takedown’ process for copyright strikes the right balance between the needs of copyright owners, the interests of users, and our efforts to provide a useful Google Search experience,” Google said. One of the problems with the massive number of takedowns is that there are also thousands of URLs taken down in error, as we’ve shown on several occasions. Preventing these abuse cases, intentional or not, remains high on Google’s agenda. “We still do our best to catch errors or abuse so we don’t mistakenly disable access to non-infringing material. Google continues to put substantial resources into improving and streamlining this process, including into identifying erroneous and abusive takedowns, and deterring abuse,” Google told us. It will be interesting to see how the tension between Google and the copyright holders develops over time, and how long it will be before we report on the billionth URL to be removed from Google’s search results. Source: Google Removed 100 Million “Pirate” Search Results This Year </img> </img> View the full article
22. By Maurice Bobb For those keeping score in the battle of Kanye West versus the Paparazzi, it’s super-famous rapper “1” and super-annoying paparazzo “0.” Speculation ran wild that ‘Ye would face felony robbery charges when, in an effort to thwart a photographer at LAX from taking his pictures, he wrestled said pap to the ground, but because there’s no proof that the A.P.C. fashion designer tried to actually take the man’s camera, the District Attorney will likely reject the charges. TMZ reports that LAPD robbery detectives are investigating the photographer’s allegations that his camera was in jeopardy of being jacked, but sources say that the charge won’t stick. If those charges fall through, the DA can then consider misdemeanor criminal battery charges against the “Black Skinhead” rapper for allegedly accosting the pap. The case may never reach the DA’s desk, though, because the Yeezus MC is reportedly willing to pony up some cash to make it all go away. Under the civil compromise statute, 'Ye can throw money at the problem and the case will go "bye bye" and best of all, it’s all nice and legal and it’s done all the time in these situations. So Kanye avoids jail time, but his pockets will be a bit lighter. Hopefully, he’ll exercise restraint next time he encounters all the flashing lights. Source: Getty Images Last night, "Breaking Bad" held a premiere to celebrate the start of the series' final episodes, which debut on AMC on August 11. It was essentially the last hurrah for the gang that we've come to love over the course of five seasons, and appropriately, Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul made an entrance worthy of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. As sad as we are to see "Breaking Bad" go, it's incredibly exciting knowing that we'll get an ending in a couple months, and seeing the cast so thrilled to celebrate the last episodes, it's hard not to get caught up in it too. 25. By Maurice Bobb Migos’ summer anthem, “Versace,” has already been remixed by the likes of Meek Mill and Drake, so why not let crooner Frank Ocean take a crack at it? The “Novacane” singer hasn’t released the actual audio for his version of the hit song, but one look at the lyrics he released via Tumblr reveals that he has a copious amount of shade to throw at arch rival Chris Brown. Right from the jump, Ocean takes aim at the Fortune singer with the line, “I’m not Liberace/you could stay seated I’m taking that Grammy/your music is sloppy.” Who could forget the visual of Frank taking the stage at the 2013 Grammy Awards back in February to accept the golden Gramophone for Best Urban Contemporary Album for Channel Orange back while everyone stood to applaud, except, of course, a salty Chris Breezy, who’d just been bested in the same category by the man he’d had recent run in with? The incident became a viral GIF, which the Odd Future singer touched on in his “remix.” “N----s is heated they keep on repeating the even in slow mo,” he wrote. But the biggest jab comes near the end, when Chris’ tumultuous relationship with his ex Rihanna is mentioned. “You had a lady then she hurt your ego,” he wrote before signing off with the line ,“I’m not even into Versace.” The “no audio” designation at the bottom of the lyrics sheet pretty much lets everyone know that no actual remix will be released, but the damage is done. Frank Ocean’s pen truly is mightier than the sword. View the full article
