But by early 2012 the revenue streams had not only dried up, but all existing assets had been scooped up by United States, Hong Kong and New Zealand authorities following raids against his now-defunct Mega empire. Since then Dotcom and associates Mathias Ortmann, Finn Batato and Bram van der Kolk have been engaged in a non-stop and seemingly never-ending legal battle on several fronts. On the one hand the Internet entrepreneur is fighting off an aggressive United States government, who wish to see their prey extradited to face copyright infringement charges. For this Dotcom has a legal team run by [url="http://www.techfirm.com/"]Ira Rothken[/url], who together have spent hundreds of hours on the case. In New Zealand a parallel process is being played out, with Dotcom and his co-defendants not only fighting extradition, but an illegal raid against his home and property in January 2012, damages against both the police and NZ spy agency GCSB, and efforts to have his assets released. All of this requires money – lots of money – and over the last 19 months the time invested and associated costs have being increasing at an alarming rate. But of course, costs are also being accrued by those on the other side, whose ultimate aim is to send Dotcom to the United States to face justice. Costs to the US taxpayer have not been revealed but according to the latest estimate by [url="http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10904690"]NZHerald[/url], lawyers fighting Dotcom on behalf of the New Zealand government have already run up bills of around $1.6m (NZ$2m). While most of the submitted URLs do indeed link to infringing content, not all requests received by Google are correct. The automated systems used by many of the copyright holders often trigger notices that include links to perfectly legitimate content, and sometimes even their own work. The latter happened in a recent DMCA takedown request sent by [url="http://www.leakid.com/"]LeakID[/url] on behalf of Microsoft. Instead of listing URLs of infringing material, Microsoft asked Google to remove links to their own websites, as can be seen below. The six links point to Microsoft’s store, support pages and product descriptions. A pretty embarrassing mistake to say the least. [b]Whoops..[/b] [img]http://torrentfreak.com/images/google-dmca-ms.png[/img] Luckily for Microsoft, Google spotted the error, meaning that the pages in question have not been removed from the search results, although it would have been a fitting punishment if Google had decided to comply with the request. While the above error is rather entertaining, matters gets more serious when copyright holders censor legitimate content produced by others. It’s hard to say how frequently this happens, but just by browsing through the many DMCA notices we have been able to find dozens of examples already. Just two weeks ago we found that [url="http://torrentfreak.com/hbo-asks-google-to-take-down-infringing-vlc-media-player-130715/"]HBO had asked Google[/url] to remove a perfectly legal copy of the open source video player VLC, for example. The link in question was clearly submitted in error, but at the time of writing it’s still absent from Google’s search result. Some individuals respond to these mistakes by blaming the search engine, and taking counter-action. This week prime minister David Cameron’s announcement that ISPs will be instructed to implement a ‘default on’ [url="http://torrentfreak.com/uk-porn-filter-will-censor-other-content-too-isps-reveal-130726/"]filtering scheme[/url] to deny access to porn and other yet-to-be-defined content has only added to the controversy. Of course, it’s almost inevitable that when content is blocked there will be those who seek to unblock it. That’s been the case with the High Court-ordered blockades of various torrent sites such as The Pirate Bay, KickassTorrents and, [url="http://torrentfreak.com/uk-internet-providers-start-blocking-eztv-and-ezrss-130726/"]as reported[/url] this week, against popular TV torrent site EZTV. But while dozens of proxy sites have appeared to offer workarounds, those too are slowly being added to the UK’s blocklist. If only there was a proxy service to unblock torrent sites and unblock the proxies too, people have cried. Well now there is. Called Immunicity, it’s from the people behind [url="http://www.torrenticity.com/"]Torrenticity[/url] and it’s the first web-based tool to offer both a torrent site and torrent site proxy unblocking service. “We are angered by the censorship that is happening in the UK and in other countries across the globe, so we got our thinking caps on and decided to do something about it,” Immunicity’s operators told TorrentFreak. “We saw that there was a gap in the market for anti-censorship services. VPNs are great but they often require a subscription, Tor is great too but it’s very slow and getting it running just to browse a few torrent sites can be cumbersome. Immunicity is different because it is free and implemented in such a way that the end result is seamless access to previously blocked content.” Immunicity currently unblocks a range of sites [url="http://www.immunicity.org/blockedsites"]listed here[/url]. It can unblock censored websites over http and https, route censored sites over its own servers, and will work for users in any country, not just the UK. In Firefox, for example, users only have to click options, network, settings, click a checkbox, paste in a URL and click OK. To turn the service off again is even more straightforward. Interestingly, while [url="http://www.immunicity.org"]Immunicity unblocks torrent sites[/url] now, it will also unblock porn sites in the future. “With Cameron’s upcoming porn ‘opt-in’ filter, we intend to include many of the web’s porn sites in our offering. The end result will be seamless access to pornography that would typically be blocked under his plans. When these sites are added, users will not have to update their configuration or do anything else, they can simply start browsing like they did before,” Immunicity explain. “We are planning on having multiple configurations, ‘all’, ‘torrent sites’, and ‘pornography’, so users can decide which type of site they want to use with Immunicity. Changing will simply be a case of entering a different PAC file. Of course we’ll be adding more and more servers as and when we need to in order to handle all the traffic,” they conclude.
