Listen: James Murphy Describes Dream of Making New York Subway Stations Sing

Bowie remix and short film aside, James Murphy's most fascinating post-LCD idea may be yet to come. As Line of Best Fit points out (via Pigeons and Planes), Murphy recently spoke with the Chicago radio program Sound Opinions and discussed his dream of making the turnstiles at New York City subway stations produce sound. He says he's been working on generating interest in the concept for 14 years.

With Murphy's public music plan, pushing through a turnstile would trigger a specific note. "I want to make every station in New York have a different set of dominant keys," he said, "so that people who grow up will later on in life hear a piece of music and say, 'Oh, that's like Union Square." His hope is that "during rush hour it would make a really beautiful piece of music."

"It’s such a brutal city," Murphy said. "I love it, but I think one little gift of kindness would be nice." Perhaps Murphy can tap his fellow New Yorkers in Vampire Weekend to get some attention from the city's new mayor Bill de Blasio.

You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
