Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks Announce New Album Wig Out at Jagbags, Share Video for "Lariat"

As hinted at in our interview with Malkmus last week, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks are back with the follow up to their Beck-produced 2011 LP Mirror Traffic. It's called Wig Out at Jagbags and it's out January 7 via Matador (January 6 in the UK via Domino). Below, check out the video for album track "Lariat". It's the music video, but it also serves as a lyric video... if you speak French.

If you pre-order the album from Matador's store, they'll throw in a one-sided 7" on strawberry red vinyl featuring a non-album track called "Pick Up the Spare".

Malkmus said of the album:

"Wig Out at Jagbags is inspired by Cologne, Germany, Mark Von Schlegell, Rosemarie Trockel, Von Spar and Jan Lankisch, Can and Gas; Stephen-Malkmus-imagined Weezer/Chili Peppers, Sic Alps, UVA in the late 80's, NYRB, Aroma Charlottenburg, inactivity, Jamming, Indie guys tring to sound Memphis, Flipper, Pete Townshend, Pavement, The Joggers, The NBA and home life in the 2010's..."

Check out Larry Fitzmaurice's interview with Malkmus about the making of the album, and check out the band's European tour dates beneath the video.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
