To computer or not to computer?

That is the question!

Edwin from Duo Blank explains both sides of the coin. Is computer and certain software regarded as a stand alone setup and the professional method to create music nowadays?

"Thanks to the abundance in memory, disk space and processor capacity plus the availability of excellent sound cards, this is definitely the best and most cost effective method of professional music production especially for electronic music."

But there's always another competitive argument against this.

"Obviously analogue and sound purists with unlimited budgets would definitely think otherwise! However one can still say that all major studios worldwide utilise a computer or more as the main composition, sound recording and mastering tool."

Upcoming producer Reuben Lee said that he received positive comments when performing with a computer but also heard people saying that live with a computer is for young kids,

"I don't do what I do to build an image, but it's because I like to do it. Apart from that, Surgeon and Christian Wunsch performed with a computer in front of our eyes!"

So in the light of this, is the era of hardware synths and drum machines history? Edwin continues that it will never happen especially in the live music and jamming environment... "even though we are currently assisting to the advent of the open synth which is basically a laptop running music software, a decent soundcard and a keyboard controller all bundled in one unit!"

I think we are going to see a fusion trend continue between electronica and traditional instruments, and hopefully some great stuff will continue to evolve from that

There are advantages and disadvantages to everything so I don't think analog is going away. I had an article printed out that explained in detail some of the pros/cons of each. If I can find it maybe I can see what the website was and post the link. It was interesting reading if you like that sort of info. Someone else printed it for me and I have no contact with him since I got laid off (he did too) so it may be a problem. :(

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
