  9. by di-ve.com Tuesday, 10 May, 2005 Renaissance Productions Ltd (RPL) is organising a cultural, musical treat of the highest level for the Maltese public. On July 9, 2005 the world renowned Maestro, Riccardo Muti, will perform at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta. Mro. Muti is being accompanied by his 85 member Luigi Cherubini Orchestra, each one having been handpicked by the Maestro himself. Riccardo Muti has had a long and distinguished career. He was Musical Director of Opera and Classical music at La Scala in Milan for 20 years, and has conducted operas and concerts in all of the greatest theatres and festivals in the world. His dark long hair and young looks have become his visual trademark and his name a mark of great quality. Two years ago he has selected 85 musicians to form the Luigi Cherubini Orchestra which is based in Piacenza. This talented group of musicians, together with their famous conductors, are set to take the musical world by storm as they intend to travel and perform in various countries in the near future. It is indeed an honour for Malta and a feather in the cap of Renaissance Productions Ltd. that Malta will be the first concert outside Italy for both Maestro Muti and the Orchestra Cherubini. In fact, talks are also underway with Italian TV stations to broadcast the performance. It is events of this calibre that will place Malta firmly on the cultural map. To this effect both the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Michael Frendo, and the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Francis Zammit Dimech, are also involved. The directors for Renaissance Productions Ltd., Dr. Anton Tabone and Mr. Amabile Zammit, have indicated that Muti's performance in Malta will be followed by other major quality cultural events both in Malta & Internationally. Quality is desirable but also expensive and the company is seeking local corporate sponsors to be associated with these events which will help make them more financially accessible to the general Maltese public. BIOGRAPHY OF RICCARDO MUTI Born in Naples in 1941, winner of the Cantelli Prize in 1967, Riccardo Muti has been Musical Director of La Scala since 1986. From 1980 to 1992 he was Musical Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, which he has led on several tours. From 1968 to 1980 he was Principal Director and Musical Director of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Since 1972 he has conducted the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, achieving such success as to be nominated Principal Director, successor to Otto Klemperer. In 1979 he was nominated their Principal Director, and in 1982 "Conductor Laureate". In 1987 Riccardo Muti was nominated Principal Director of the Scala Philharmonic Orchestra, with which in 1988 he received the Viotti d'Oro and with which he went on tour in Italy and in Europe. In 1996 Muti conducted the Vienna Musikverein Philharmonic at the closing of the Viennese Festival Week and in a triumphant tour in the Far East (Japan, Korea, Hong Kong) and in Germany. Since 1971 he has been a regular participant of the Salzburg Festival, conducting operas and concerts. His Mozart opera performances have become an important tradition of the Festival over the years. Apart from La Scala, Muti has conducted operatic productions in Philadelphia, Munich, Vienna and London, and at the Ravenna Festival. He is a regular guest of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Viennese Philharmonic (who have honoured him with the Golden Ring, reserved for the greatest orchestra directors of the world) with which in 1988 he completed a European tour and whom he conducted most recently at La Scala, in 1994. Still on the concert platform of the Viennese Philharmonic in January 1991, he conducted in Salzburg the Concerto with which he opened the Mozart celebrations, in 1992 the celebrated concert of 150 years of the orchestra, and on 1 January 1993 and 1997 the famous New Year's concert (which he will conduct also in the year 2000). In April 1994 Riccardo Muti, after a series of concerts in Vienna, directed the Viennese Philharmonic on tour in Germany and France and has conducted the Mass in B minor by Bach in Vienna and Dresden. In 1996 he conducted the Viennese Philharmonic in the celebratory concert for the millenium of Austria as well as Roberto De Simone's edition of Mozart's Cosi fan tutte at the Ravenna Festival. He has been to Japan (1988 and 1995) with the Teatro alla Scala as well as Germany, Russia and France where, in 1988, he conducted Verdi's Requiem Mass in the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. In 1989 the triumphant tour of La Scala in Russia was applauded by eminent personalities in the political and cultural realm, counting amongs others Michail Gorbachov and Andrej Sacharov. In July 1992 Riccardo Muti conducted Verdi's La Traviata and the Requiem Mass in a prestigious tour by the Teatro alla Scala in Seville, Madrid and Barcelona, marking the event of Expo '92. In October of the same year he conducted the Scala Orchestra and Chorus in two concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York. In 1994 he conducted the Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt. In 1995 he conducted a new production of La Traviata at the Salzburg Festival with the Viennese Philharmonic and in September of the same year La Traviata, Falstaff and the Requiem Mass by Verdi in a triumphant tour of La Scala in Tokyo. In 1995 he inaugurated the Scala opera season with Mozart's Magic Flute and, ten years after his debut as Musical Director, he has again proposed Nabucco by Verdi. In his role as Director of Music at the Teatro alla Scala, Riccardo Muti has conducted the more popular scores of the young Verdi, such as Nabucco and Attila, as well as the first two operas of the romantic trilogy - La Traviata and Rigoletto. He has presented the Da Ponte trilogy by Mozart and given an impulsive exploration of the neo-classical repertoire rarely performed, such as Lodoiska by Luigi Cherubini and La Vestale by Gaspare Spontini. Having already conducted Der Fliegende Hollander and Parsifal, the Wagnerian engagement by Riccardo Muti was devoted to the Ring cycle, opening with Die Walkure (December 1994) and continuing with Das Rheingold (May 1996). During the 1994-95 season Muti conducted Arrigo Boito's Mefistofele for the first time. On 18 May 1996 he conducted the extraordinary concert for the Fiftieth Anniversary of the reconstruced hall of the Teatro alla Scala, and on 7 December he inaugurated the season of the Scala with Armide by Gluck. In April 1997 he conducted Wagner's Siegfreid at La Scala, and in May Le Nozze di Figaro. Still in the course of 1997 during the celebrations for the Schubert bicentenary, heading the Viennese Philharmonic he conducted an important series of concerts, including the prestigious performance at the Dome of Santo Stefano in Vienna where he conducted the Mass in E flat major D 950. During his career Riccardo Muti has obtained numerous awards and academic honours: from the University of Philadelphia and from Mount Holyhoke College in Massachussets, from the Warwick University in England, from Westminster College Choir in Princeton and from the Italian University of Bologna, Urbino and Cremona. Riccardo Muti is an honorable member of the Royal Academy of Music, the Academy of Santa Cecilia, and the Luigi Cherubini Academy in Florence. He is Grande'Ufficiale (Great Official) and Cavaliere of Gran Croce of the Italian Republic. He has been honoured with Order of the Cross from the Federal Republic of Germany, with the Cross of Honour from the Republic of Austria and with the Commendatore Cross of the Cavalieri in Malta. In December 1992 he was awarded the Legion of Honour by the French Republic. He is citizen of Philadelphia, Florence, Ravenna, Molfetta, Tredozio, Maiolati Spontini, Busseto and Milano. "Muti stands out as one of those rare conductors who can make an orchestra surpass itself." Andrew Clark, Financial Times, April 15, 1996
  10. Corkskrew reviewed in prestigious Classic Rock magazine by di-ve.com Monday, 09 May, 2005 The band has recently received a very good rating and review on the prestigious UK rock magazine Classic Rock, available also in Maltese newsagents. The band's recent album No Ordinary Maybe received an eight out ten rating in the May issue of Classic Rock, with the reviewer added that Corkskrew is a "very promising band...". The review read: "Apart from Krokus frontman Marc Storace, Malta has had little to offer to the rock world. But Corkskrew may change that. Their first album, Micromania, was more Cardigans-like synth pop rock, but this new record finds them in a different mood that's heavy on the guitar. A very promising band indeed." This is the second time that Corkskrew featured in Classic Rock. In 2002, the band was featured in a regular column on new emerging acts around the world. Over the past years, the band received many encouraging reviews on international publications, including a half-page feature on the US-based indie-rock magazines Lollipop and Amplifier, following the successful radio-promotion deal in the States. Meanwhile, Corkskrew latest single from their latest album, Insomniac, has also reached high positions on local radio station charts, hitting top five positions. The CD album No Ordinary Maybe, which contains the hit singles Blind Spot and Insomniac, is available for sale at Exotique and D'Amato. For more information visit www.corkskrew.net

  16. Clarinet Celebrity at the Manoel by di-ve.com Thursday, 14 October, 2004 Clarinet celebrity, Luigi Magistrelli, accompanied at the piano by Claudia Bracco, will be performing at the Manoel Theatre on Tuesday, October 19th, in a recital of predominantly Italian operatic favourites transcribed for the two instruments. Held in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, the recital will feature pieces by Sciroli, Bruck, Verdi, Rossini, Bellini and Camilleri. Professor of clarinet at the Conservatory of Milan, Magistrelli is a brilliantly versatile performer who has exhibited his prowess as soloist with renowned Italian orchestras, as well as with several chamber groups in the principal Italian theatres, as well as all over Europe, in Africa, India, the U.S.A., China and Japan. He has recorded extensively, including previously unknown works for clarinet, for leading companies. Claudia Bracco is a fine accompanist, who has won 49 competitions, securing no less than sixteen first prizes. She has performed as soloist and accompanist throughout the foremost theatres in Italy, collaborating with musicians of the highest caliber. The operatic Fantasies which dominate the programme reflect a practice largely in vogue during the 'bel canto' period in Italy of arranging operatic arias enjoying most popularity for various wind and string instruments. The clarinet brought a wide range of these arias to the attention of the public. Luigi Magistrelli and Claudia Bracco will be bringing some of the loveliest of these to our attention by dedicating the second half of their recital totally to them. Reservations for the recital by Magistrelli/Bracco may be made from the Manoel Theatre Booking Office, tel. 21 246389, e-mail [email protected] and on-line www.teatrumanoel.com

  19. Hades presents Linda Lamb and Lab Insect by Mauro Calleja Lab Insect Monday, 11 October, 2004 Hades Events come into effect next Saturday at Liquid with another deliciously cooked line-up locally together with America and France; world wide delicacies...The promoter explains... You caught one hell of a crowd at Vitalic and the official Tribu after hours and now you're presenting the Maltese with two rather more chic performances Linda Lamb and Lab Insect. Do you think people understand the effort of such a promoter and are ready to pay a Lm6.50 ticket? - Consider that Linda Lamb will be coming from New York. Yes, we're talking a premier live performance with electric guitar and piano here, not the most casual or regular performance. More of a concert, I comfortably admit. The cost to bring quality is always high but some promoters including myself tend to risk for quality, perhaps building a name on this eventually, Rome wasn't built in one day I think. Moreover it was a bit difficult to convince Linda Lamb to come in the middle of an American tour but she'll be here just the same to grace the Maltese with her own voice. Nice expectations for the crowd. What will the delicacies include? - Lab Insect varies a lot, you'll be prone to listen to an electro intro than techno and even acid house at its best, the blend seems to be interesting. And Linda Lamb? - Electro but not the typically Gigolo electro; more of a Fischer Spooner type. See it's a one man band on electric guitar and piano so that means improvisation topped with her sensual voice -- "the sexiest voice to ever be produced over a Gigolo record!" (DJ Gigolo press release) What do you think of local DJs that had a part in shaping the electro influence on Malta and who are the most prominent in your opinion? - Junior B together with Darren from Auralbots and JD Frank I think were most consistent in the last couple of years. I think electro is more of an evolution or let's say continuation of techno. Not that they don't have their own characteristics as style, of course they are different, but these three DJs managed to keep in the same line of thought, not change completely -- they have kept the underground alive by keeping the general techno and electro interesting and highly spirited. What is Hades already planning after the 16th October? - Simply the return of Vitalic and another separate event featuring a big artist in 2005. Enough for now. Please don't hesitate to send your feedback and comments on [email protected] Line up for the night includes: J.D.Frank, Auralbots, Junior B, Linda Lamb (Live) and Lab Insect (3 hr set), Adrian V, A.I., Interface, Darin, D.Drucker and A Call. 20. Woody Aki: Berlin Revisited by Mauro Calleja Woody Aki pic by Aldo Cauchi Savona Friday, 08 October, 2004 Eight years after leaving Berlin, he stepped in once again? Vigorous experience as Woody explains it to be? It was meant to be a holiday although having fun sometimes can be tiring. How do you consider it now that you've come back to Malta and contemplated the experience? - I'm still digesting the damn thing! I'm not exactly the purveyor of commercial sounds that makes a superstar DJ such as Tiesto for example, and the crowds I played to don't amount to what Tiesto pulls either. But...how can I put this? It was perfect for me, because the crowds were like Kylie Minogue...small, perfectly formed, extremely cool, and sexy to watch! Why is there such a big difference between clubbing in Malta and abroad? (Duh!) - It depends where you are, I guess. There are always similarities, but in Berlin's case, there is an unseen bolt of energy that can be found in every nook and cranny around the city, even in the grottiest of clubs. You can't really explain it, but I can understand why artists like U2, Iggy Pop and David Bowie released amazing albums that were recorded or written there. The vibe's quite austere, but very inspiring. How did it feel playing three nights in a row in a Berlin that has changed from your previous experience eight years before? - Bear in mind that when I lived there back then, I never DJed - I just clubbed my arse off. But I do recall that before I left there for good in 1996, I made a mental note to return the favour that Berlin did for me, i.e. the city made me look at the whole spectrum of Art through an infinitely wide lens for the rest of my life, and incorporating it within my artistic output, as opposed to Malta, which makes me look at art with a capital F prefixed to the damn word! I usually hate to use the following sentence for fear of sounding like a bloody Kenny G fan, but Berlin enlightened me in a way that I always aspired to achieve, and now that I've played there, I seem to have returned much more than just a favour! As for change, I can only compare Berlin then and now from a visitor's point of view - the centre of the city has been taken over by Armani suits, but as a result the bohemian blood of the city has moved East, which has made the whole underground scene even more cooler than my last stay all those years ago. For good and for worse, it looks more like a capital city now. It seemed that you left a mark on your third performance at Schoenwetter. Do you think it was a once in a lifetime experience that you get to play all that you want to play without exception or without people asking you to change the music? - The Schoenwetter gig was surreal, for want of a word. Imagine if you had the "Monti" set up near the Upper Barracca in Valletta, and you have to go through the "Monti" to find yourself playing in the Upper Barracca to people from all walks of life with their children and their dogs, either chilling out on their deckchairs or on the huge sandpit within, or dancing regardless of their age - obviously the setting is in Berlin, not Valletta (dream on!). Mid-way through my set (which kicked off at 1pm), this guy in his early fifties started asking me where I come from, what do you call this music, and whether I have a mix CD on me to sell to him. I told him that I never bothered to do a mix CD ever in my life, and the bloke gave me a verbal ticking off in return. He was followed by a fair number of people asking me the same questions and giving me the same "shame on you" response for not having a mix CD to sell... I would have sold around 45-50 CDs that day had I done one, but where the hell did I know that I was going to impress this much? I mean, come on...this is Berlin - I was plankton in a huge ocean here! As for being asked what to play!|no one bothered to ask, and even if they did, I wouldn't change my music for anyone, be it in Berlin or Benghajsa? I'm no one's jukebox! Are you planning to go back for more? - If the influential people I met after the Schoenwetter gig stood by their proposals, than yeah - I will be. But you have to be a Doubting Thomas when it comes to the music business, and I've been in this business for 17 years in different capacities. I have no aspirations to take over the world, and my feet are firmly on the ground as a consequence of experiences that stemmed from those 17 years. But I would gladly take any opportunity to play there. I'm an easy going person when it comes to DJing, and my dream only extends to playing in cities where the vibe doesn't stop at the exit door of the club...the only two cities that give me that vibe so far are Barcelona (I'd love to play there someday) and Berlin, and something inside me says that San Francisco might have that same vibe, but we just have to wait and see when that will happen, if ever... 22. New projects by Pianist Rosetta de Battista by di-ve.com Tuesday, 05 October, 2004 Pianist and music educator Rosetta de Battista is embarking on an innovative initiative, AcCompany, aimed at providing the young with learning opportunities through music, instilling a deeper understanding of musicians in children and training singing actors at her Swieqi studio from next month. The realisation of a dream, AcCompany stems from her "desire to emulate the high artistic standards imparted by the professionals, who inspired my own musical education". Among Ms de Battista's projects in the pipeline for 2004-2005 is a novel Learning Through Music course, designed to enhance child development and education from as young as six months. According to the pianist, "music is the ideal medium through which to 'rehearse' the gifts of communication... Pre-verbal skills closely correspond to the elements of music. Musical play is, therefore, an ideal instrument for the development of the infant's psychological, social and emotional faculties". Aimed at infants and toddlers, accompanied by a caregiver, the idea is to stimulate them through creative, action-based activities, such as sounds, songs, movement and mime, instrument playing, listening, turn-taking, interaction and sharing to expand their social and interactive skills. Meet the Musician is another project concerned with the musical education -- not just classical -- of children aged between five and 12. The idea is to get them to appreciate and understand music through first-hand encounters with musicians through mini-recitals, quizzes and other entertaining means to enhance their appreciation and lead to an informed taste as they grow older. "Before we expect local audiences to grow in number, we must familiarise children with the musicians...Only through a closer connection between them can we hope to encourage younger members of society to enjoy art and culture and integrate these important aspects in their everyday lives," Ms de Battista explained. About to start her fourth scholastic year as music teacher at St Martin's College, Ms de Battista is well versed in the UK music curriculum and is keen to create encounters between students and musicians to allow them to get to know the person, the instrument, the musical repertoire, the styles and sounds through live, interactive recitals and workshops, held once monthly. She has already secured the collaboration of Maltese and foreign professional musicians for the course. But her ideas are not only aimed at children. Ms de Battista's recent involvement as vocal coach for FM Productions' version of Chicago and Actinghouse's On the Seduction of Angels has helped her identify a need to improve singing actors' musicianship skills. She is currently working on an intensive course, Musicianship for Singing Actors, to educate adults in theatre, who have no formal musical training. "Many actors feel the need for a deeper understanding of the musical aspect of their performance. The aim of the course is to equip performers with the necessary tools to tackle a musical score." Ms de Battista trained in performing and teaching at the Royal College of Music and furthered her studies in music therapy and education at Surrey University. Since her return to Malta, she has worked extensively in the fields of piano teaching and performing, music teaching and therapy, and has organised a number of events and workshops for actors and musicians alike. 24. Miriam Christine chosen to be Malta's ambassador for the EU campaign - For Diversity. Against Discrimination by di-ve.com Singer Miriam Christine to support and promote EU campaign against discrimination. Saturday, 02 October, 2004 The campaign, with the slogan "For Diversity. Against Discrimination", is being developed in close co-operation with EU governments, trade unions, employers' organisations and NGOs, and was launched on 16th June 2003 and will run till 2006. Media Consulta is responsible for the implementation of the campaign. The agency has a network of agency correspondents in every EU Member State, including Malta, and has chosen local personality Miriam Christine to be the ambassador and spokesperson for the campaign for Malta and Gozo. The popular singer and songwriter will be spreading the word for this campaign during various shows, concerts and TV programmes. Miriam Christine explained, "This campaign is aimed at combating discrimination, and I'm proud to have been asked to be part of it. Discrimination exists in many ways: because of racial or ethnic origin, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, age and disability and I think it's a big issue that needs highlighting. I hope I can assist in making people more aware of it." The campaign aims to communicate a positive message on diversity to help prevent people from being discriminated against in any way. It is being publicised through a wide range of channels, such as TV or print adverts, website, seminars and media events. Brochures, flyers and posters will provide information about new EU rules against discrimination in the various Member States. Born in Brazil but raised in Gozo, Miriam Christine was all too aware of her ethnicity when she was young. "My upbringing was very good, but I did suffer from bullying at school," Miriam Christine revealed. "In some ways, I was looked at as being 'different'. This left a mark on me and I went through stages when my self-esteem was very low. It was through music that I feel I overcame prejudice and earned respect. I re-discovered my true self, and belief in myself was restored. I was also lucky to grow up within a society that, on the whole, is very warm and welcoming, so my experiences were more isolated, and I think they were a product of a lack of education and awareness; something this campaign is tackling brilliantly." And by pure coincidence, the title track on Miriam Christine's latest CD album 'Little Zee' is about the racial prejudices she suffered as a child and how she managed to overcome them. "This EU campaign will help a lot of people, both victims of discrimination...and people who don't understand the value of diversity...and I'm glad to be part of it." 25. One stop for all DJs! by Mauro Calleja Friday, 01 October, 2004 One stop for all DJs...as Gabri-L and Boyfunk claim it to be: "Defunked is not just a shop but an ever evolving idea which we intend to develop, a one stop shop where one could learn how to DJ, buy quality music and earn gigs from our DJ agency which will be kicked off in the following months and bringing some top international artists for local promoters. Along with this, producers can finally get serious consideration for their productions." Don't you think it's more than enough where clubbing record shops and especially DJ courses are concerned in the country? Not at all, it's only two record shops that I'm aware of which stock records on a regular basis. Secondly and most importantly DJing should be affordable for everyone. In this way more people could engage this hobby and finally our club scene could evolve. This is why our DJ courses and records are the least expensive in the whole island. This is proven by the fact that in only 3 weeks since our opening we already have 6 enthusiasts undergoing our courses. How are you planning to release your own label and to represent around 17 German record labels as A&R representatives? We are planning to release our own label during the winter but only on CD format for the time being. When it comes to the 17 German labels which we represent locally namely Hard Nation, Tenor, Caballero, Guarija & Upbeat, we already have sent a couple of demos but we intend to carry out a producer competition with Dansezee magazine for more material. What do you think about the current party scene and how would you intend to influence the crowd with your methods? The local club scene is getting bigger by the minute. For Defunked, quality is a priority...That is why we plan to get the biggest names in Malta, to give our contribution to the local club scene!
