ST. LOUIS - Ken Griffey Jr. trotted around the bases as if it were just another home run. It was anything but that — Griffey hit a 2-2 fastball from Matt Morris into the right-field stands to lead off the sixth inning Sunday, securing a spot in the record books as the 20th player with 500 homers.

The star center fielder ended a frustrating stretch with the swing, which helped the Cincinnati Reds (news) beat the St. Louis Cardinals (news) 6-0. At 34, he became the sixth-youngest player to reach the milestone.

I was listening to the game on the car radio while coming home from a youth baseball game...quite a thrill when Griffey hit it. He's had a tough time due to injuries the last few years and I'm glad to see him having a comeback season in 2004. I've followed his career closely since he was in the minor leagues, and I have his first major league game on tape as well as the game he hit his first home run. I've also got about a hundred of his 1989 rookie cards stashed away in plastic sheets.

Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
