Interview

HARDWELL

2011 was a phenomenal year for you pick a few highlights?

Working together with Tiesto, being #24 in the DJ Mag list, several big tours abroad and my first Revealed Label night.

You played the Creamfields main-stage this year, tell us about that?

Yes 2011 was the first time mainstage for me, it was a total madness and the party was awesome. The crowd in the Uk always parties hard and I love that!

And you played the amazing Sensation in 2011, that must have been amazing?

Yeah, that was phenomenal!

At 23 you are already no. 24 in DJ Magazine top 100 DJs what is your secret ?

There is no secret.. it’s all by dedication and big love for music.
You toured a lot with Tiesto last year, how was that?

It was a big honour to go on tour with world’s greatest DJ. I learned a lot from him and it was a great experience for me.

And you’ve been working in the studio with Tiesto?

Yes that’s right we did track zero76, which was #1 on Itunes and Beatport. There is also a lot more coming.

Any other big names you’d like to work alongside?
Avicii, I would love to work with him.

You seem to constantly be in the Beatport Top Ten with your releases, do you have a specific formula that works?

No, there is no formula. It just happens and I’m happy, so many people like my music.
Your production output is really high, why is that important?

It’s a good thing to keep your sets fresh and new, because of that it’s important to keep producing and keep the people interested and want to come to your gigs.

Can we expect an album in 2012?

No, not in a short period of time. That’s really something for the future.

You’ve had phenomenal success for one so young, what advice would you give to other producers/DJs trying to break into the scene?

Be dedicated and original and keep on making tracks.

The Dutch are taking over the dance music scene yet again, what makes the Dutch so incredibly talented when it comes to the electronic scene?

In Holland there are so many parties, so for DJ’s there are a lot of ways to get some experience and to grow.

What can we expect from your set?
You can expect a lot of new tracks and one big crazy madness.

Kim – Thanks for chatting to us – Tell our readers a little about yourself?

My name is Kim Fai and I’m a Producer/DJ from a small town Called Tipton in the West Midlands. I’ve been producing for around 5/6 years now and that’s what i spend pretty much all my time doing!

Sum your style up in 3 words?

Nipples go hard!

Where do you take your inspiration from for your productions?

Mainly just jamming in the studio really. Or I might hear something on the radio that just springs off an idea in my head.

2012 has seen some of your biggest tracks to date, and we’re only 3 months in. Arguably the biggest of those is your remix for none other than Madonna – How did it feel being asked to remix for such a legend?

I was over the moon when I got the call to say I’d been asked to do it. She’s without doubt one of the biggest artists in the last 30 year, so I was excited that I could put my own twist on her new single.

If you could remix anyone else on the planet, who would it be and why?

I was a huge Oasis fan when I was young. I learnt to play guitar because of them and I could play everyone of their songs. Lead parts included. I would love to remix one of their songs but if I’m honest, I’d be scared of ruining it.

Producing or DJing – Which would be your favourite if you had to choose?

This is one I get asked a lot. For me, the two go hand in hand. I spend all my time during the week working in the studio on new tracks and edits ready to play at my shows. That’s the biggest buzz for me. Seeing all the hard work pay off when the crowd go nuts [hopefully!]

Moving to the DJ side of your career, you’ve been supported by some of the biggest names in the world, notably the likes of Steve Angello declaring his love for you and your tracks and Pete Tong tipping you to be part of the next House Mafia. If you could sing the praises of any upcoming talent, who would get the thumbs up from you?

At this time there are so many new producers coming through it’s hard to keep up! Which is a good thing. I love to see the younger generation making use of software which has become much more affordable and going nuts with it. They’re making tracks that, sound wise, are up there with some of the best in the business.

You’re also a part of the institute that is Toolroom – Any hot new releases coming our way over summer that you can tell us about?

Myself, Funkagenda & Paul Thomas are just putting the finishing touches to our first collaboration which will be out on the label in the summer which I’m very much looking forward too. We’ve been meaning to get together and work on something for a while now. Hopefully the first of many.

Rumour has it you’ll be joining the ranks of Michael Woods, Roger Sanchez and X-Press 2 by recording a special episode for the Data Transmission podcast ahead of the Bitch weekend, What can the listeners expect from that?

I’ve tried to translate the mix as though it were one of my live sets. So it’s pretty ‘In your face’! Including a few of my own tracks of course. Definitely one for when you’re getting ready to go out.

For your fans reading that are heading over to Bed, Leeds and Digital, Newcastle for the Bitch Easter Special, Do you have any musical treats in store that you can let us in on?

Lots actually! I’ve got a heap of new tracks that I’m currently testing out on the road that will be released over the remainder of the year. So if they’re there they will be getting a sneaky peak at them.

You’ll be playing alongside Hardwell at these events, Any plans to take him under your wing and show him just how well the UK can party?

Definitely. We party with the best of them!

Outside of music, what keeps you entertained? Any unusual hobbies or bizarre interests we should know about?

I’ve been getting into cooking a lot over the last few years. It’s my way of winding down after a days work in the studio. My Mrs doesn’t complain about it either.
I used to work out a lot but I find it more difficult when I’m on the road a lot. That’s my excuse anyway!

Finally, a few cheeky questions:

Ibiza or Miami?

Mmmm. I’ll go Miami

One track guaranteed to get your moving on the dance floor?

Madness – Baggy Trousers

Favourite food?

Chinese Dim Sum. I could eat it for every meal.

If you could pick one super power, what would it be?

Invisibility. I’d go to Area 51 and see wassup!

What is the one item you simply must take with you when travelling?

My laptop. My whole life is on there.

What’s your party trick?

I honestly don’t have one!

Not a lot of people know this but Kim Fai is really good at……Doing different accents. I can nail most of them. Drives my family mad though!

Catch Kim Fai at Bitch’s Easter Bank Holiday Special in Leeds AND Newcastle alongside Hardwell!!

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
