You’re only 24 and already had a number 1 hit! How does it feel? To be honest sometimes I have to pinch myself :) Itis a tad unreal but I am very happy nonetheless I see this as a crown on our work and hope for many more to come. 2. You were hailed by David Guetta as the breakthrough DJ of 2011 - are there any artists on your radar for future stardom? Oh there are soooo many to be honest we are talking to a few acts for me to back, I am sorry but can't give the specifics on that yet, just follow us on social media and you will know very soon 3. Are there any DJ’s that you haven’t already worked with who you would like to collaborate with in the future? I would love to be able to get the chance to go into the studio with TImbaland. He is not an EDM dj but it would be the greatest honor I could ever have, the man is a legend and I am a big fan 4. You travel the world and play in the most amazing venues, but what is your favourite part of being a DJ? The most favorite part for me is, when I have made a new track that it goes off when I play it. In the club is where you see your effort and hard work in the studio come to fruition. 5. What can we expect from Nicky Romero over the upcoming months? Another UK no.1…? Well I hope so guys! I just released my new track Symphonica. It is out on beatport and is doing quite well, so fingers crossed 6. You played at a lot of festivals in 2012 – what are you planning for summer 2013? I think we have all the big ones lined up, we do Tomorrowland among others and I am chuffed to say I was added to the line up for a couple Sensations, with the pinnacle for me playing the one in Amsterdam 7. What do you like to do to wind down after working? I love riding my bike, I am an adrenaline junkie and love high speed. I just bought a new one and have not yet had the chance to ride it, so soon as I get back from tour I will tear the asphalt apart :) 8. What crowd has been the best to play to? You know that is a question I get asked very often. With the risk of sounding overly diplomatic I just love playing anywhere, it is my passion. Of course some gigs are better than others. I have a great team and they make sure that all gigs I do are AWESOME :) 9. You completed a residency with David Guetta in Ibiza – how was that? The best! We are doing this again the coming Ibiza season, really looking forward to it. Ibiza holds a lot of roots musically and you have to bring your A game in order to impress people so it is a challenge and very exciting to say the least 10. What was it like working with and sharing such a huge hit with someone as legendary as Avicii? It was great, I feel we complement each other very well on the production side of things. He is great at creating melodies, I am fair at doing this but like I said we gave each other great pointers and the outcome speaks for itself to my opinion 11. How did you first get in to music, and consequently producing music? Well when I was little I joined a marching band and was taken by playing percussion as a whole. Later on when I held a shitty job collecting glasses at a local bar I was always a bit envious of the local dj. I decided I wanted to do that and not only dj but also make music, that is basically where it all kicked off. 12. Who has most influenced your musical style? Do you think you have found your niche, or can you see things developing? I always try to keep an open mind when it comes to music. I take inspiration from all areas in life. I definitely have not found my nice as I dont think that way. I produce what I feel is best and fits my mood at the time. 13. What do you make of the huge explosion in the popularity of dance music? Do you think its reputation is changing/ Yeah I think EDM is crossing over to be mainstream. 14. You’re playing a huge show for Gatecrasher Birmingham – are you looking forward to it? How do you find the British crowds/ The Brits are great!! I love playing for my UK fans, the punters I believe you call them punters :) are so full on and I feel the love and energy when I play. I totally feel we make the party together and that is the best feeling in the world 15. ‘I Could Be The One’ beat ‘Harlem Shake’ to number one – have you joined the crowds and made a Harlem Shake video? Do you think you could be tempted? Eeeeh no disrespect but no, doing a Harlem Shake video is a tad played out if you ask me, great track though Just when you thought this event could not get any bigger, it just has! The Dutch tour de force that is Hardwell joins Knife Party, Nicky Romero, Laidback Luke, Steve Aoki, Eddie Halliwell and Mikael Weermets!!! This event is unmissable for any Dutch House music fans! Act fast in getting your tickets, we are on course for a sell out!! http://gatecrasher.nutickets.com/GC2020

  13. JFK interview First and foremost we are very excited to having you back behind the Gatecrasher decks on Saturday 1st December! For those that aren’t familiar with JFK can you explain what the crowd can expect to hear from you on the night? JFK: Wow what a question to start! Well firstly with over 20 years professional experience behind me its pretty certain that i will know how to rock the crowd no matter what time i will be playing! Always a crowd pleaser i play for the crowd... always, they pay my wages! As a DJ / producer / promoter you have been heavily involved since the early days of the UK Trance scene. In your opinion, how has the scene changed since when you first started. Has it changed for the better or the worse? JFK: Well it wasn’t a scene when I started it was a small uprising of people back lashing against the oppressive late 80’s early 90’s shit Ritzy discos. We went underground and I found my favourite ever club –my mecca- called Venus in Nottingham. I was a weekly regular and in this 500 capacity club witnessed everyone important: Jeremy Healy, Pete Tong, Sasha, Boy George and many more, I even saw Jam & Spoon play ‘Stella’ live in their first ever uk appearance, you could reach out and touch them... it quickly turned into a worldwide phenomenon with superclubs springing up in everytown... and then the downturn... it faded away like a bad comedown but... slowly things have started to improve again, the people putting on bad gigs have disappeard and the solid promoters remain.. the party might not happen every week now but the parties are bigger and better! How did you get into Trance music and what have been the highlights of your career? JFK: Well before Trance music (that’s rights kids there was once life without Trance-try and imagine it!) it was just called house.. and that’s what we played, in 1987 it was just music that made me you jack, in the early 90’s it was Acid, in the mid 90’s it was garage, in the late 90’s it became Trance, just a natural progression of blended music that made people dance and i wanted to play anything that made clubbers dance. I suppose the very first official Trance record that broke massively was ‘System F’ Out Of The Blue. Mixmag used to run an article called ‘The Judge and the jury’ hosted each month by Judge Jules who was the world’s biggest Dj at that time, he invited myself and Scott Bond to bring one record to be reviewed... i took ‘Out of the blue’ and after the 5 star reviews by everyone booked Ferry Corsten to play his UK debut on the back of it. The Trance scene was born. Do you still love your Trance music as much as you did when you first got into it and have your music tastes changed much since? JFK: Trance will always be a massive part of my life.. even if most of my dance scene life was pre Trance, but i now love even more parts of Trances fragmented offshoots too. The new progressive scene is massive and now slower beats have given Trance new cooler edge which has enabled it to re-invent itself once again. My taste will always stay the same. If it makes people dance its good. If you could your ideal line up, who would be on it and where would you hold the event? JFK: Ideal line up-PFFFFFF- Ive already had it, Myself, Armin Van Buuren and Ferry Corsten back to back. The best night we all ever had! Who are your favourite DJ’s / producers in the scene right now? JFK: Today is influenced by new sounds and ways of making the groove happen- John Dahlback and Joris Voorn and my new hero Umek. Over the last few years there appears to have been a split in the trance scene. Those that lean to the more commercial, house sound and those that go for the real underground Trance sound. Which side are you on, and can you see your style changing in the years to come? JFK: Well its difficult to pin point commercialism! If you are talking about making music that the masses liked then the Superclubs of the 90s were the commercial clubs, commercial means making money and thats what they did, if you mean underground liked by a few cooler clubbers then there will always be fractions of that too. Ive always played to the mass audience for maximum impact... if you are asking me if i am going to play the latest new craze that only a few people will nod their head too in appreciation then you are asking the wrong DJ. Finally, after many years experience in the scene, where can you see Trance heading and what do you think the future holds? JFK: Trance is just another form of dance music which has had incredible resolve and evolution over many years.. it will evolve in a new way it will take us all on a wonderful journey but at the core is one thing we all connect with... it makes us emotional and it makes it unstoppable to dance too. Quality last forever.
