After months of uncertainty, Mick Jagger has managed to fit Queen Elizabeth II into his busy schedule. The Rolling Stones star said Tuesday that he will go to Buckingham Palace on Dec. 12 to accept his knighthood.

After difficulties caused by his touring schedule, Jagger was initially slated to be knighted on Dec. 10, the same date as rugby star Jonny Wilkinson will be made a Member of the Order of the British Empire, or MBE. But Jagger did not want to distract attention away from the man who led England to the rugby World Cup title last month.

"Mick is delighted that a date has been agreed for the investiture after spending over a year touring the world with the Rolling Stones," a Jagger spokesman said.

"He would also like to express his gratitude to Buckingham Palace for their understanding of his other commitments over the last 18 months."

The spokesman said the singer's 90-year-old father Joe will be joining him for the big day.

The Stones have played 114 shows worldwide over the past 15 months.

But Keith Richard is the twin brother of Mick's dad, though, right?

Keith Richards?

I thought that was the name of the animated skeleton they had on stage during performances.

wait, wait, you mean that's a guy?

Keith Richards has criticized his old friend and fellow Rolling Stone Mick Jagger for accepting a knighthood.

In an interview published in the December issue of the music magazine "Uncut," the Stones' guitarist was quoted as saying, "I thought it was ludicrous to take one of those gongs (awards) from the establishment when they did their very best to throw us in jail," in a reference to his and Jagger's 1967 conviction on drug offenses, later overturned on appeal.

"Just as we were about to start a new tour, I thought it sent out the wrong message. It's not what the Stones is about, is it?" he said. "I told Mick, 'It's a ... paltry honor.'"

"He defended himself by saying that (Prime Minister) Tony Blair insisted that he took the knighthood. Like that's an excuse. Like you can't turn down anything. Like it doesn't depend how you feel about it."

Jagger said Tuesday that his busy touring schedule has finally allowed him to arrange a date to collect his award from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace: Dec. 12.

Richards, who was once briefly imprisoned for allowing marijuana to be smoked in his home — another conviction that was later overturned — said he doubted he would ever be offered a similar honor.

"Because they know what I would've said ... they knew I'd tell them where they could put it," he said.

Mick Jagger became Sir Mick Jagger today in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace in London. He received his Knighthood for his services to pop music.

Now You Can Call Him Sir Mick Jagger

By REUTERS

December 12, 2003

LONDON (Reuters) - LONDON (Reuters) - Mick Jagger, the Rolling Stones lead singer, who was once a scourge of the British establishment, received its ultimate accolade on Friday when he was knighted by heir to the throne Prince Charles in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

"It was all rather wonderfully formal," the 60-year-old rock n'roll lothario told reporters after the ceremony in which Charles tapped him lightly on each shoulder with a sword.

Asked if he believed that he deserved the top British establishment accolade, the grinning Jagger replied: "Yeah."

The man who has fronted the legendary rock group for the past four decades, rejected suggestions that he had sold out to the establishment against which he had railed for so long.

"I don't really think the establishment as we knew it exists any more," he said with a slight toss of the head.

But showing at least a residue of rebellion, Jagger shunned the traditional top hat and tails, opting for a long black leather coat, purple scarf and sports shoes.

He took along his 92-year-old father Joe and two of his daughters to share the occasion.

Jagger hit out at fellow Stone Keith Richards who claimed he was betraying the band's principles by accepting the honor.

"It is a bit like a bawling child who hasn't got an ice cream," he said, declining further comment.

The craggy-faced Richards, whose drug and drink fueled lifestyle is the stuff of legend, told Uncut music magazine he did not want to share a stage with a knight.

"I don't want to step out on stage with someone wearing a coronet and sporting the old ermine," he complained.

The award puts Jagger on a ceremonial par with pop knights Sir Elton John and Sir Paul McCartney.

Jagger delayed his ceremony from earlier this week to avoid a clash with England's newest hero, Jonny Wilkinson, who secured the rugby world cup for England last month in Australia with a drop kick in the final's closing seconds.

Wilkinson picked up the lesser award of an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) on Wednesday.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
