Based on Chrome browser, it would directly challenge Microsoft

SAN FRANCISCO - In a direct challenge to Microsoft, Google is expected to announce on Wednesday that it is developing an operating system for a personal computer based on its Chrome browser, according to two people briefed on Google’s plans.

The details of the technology could not be learned, but Google plans to make the announcement on a company blog on Wednesday afternoon, this person said.

Google did not immediately return calls and e-mail messages seeking comment.

It's supposed to be very fast. There's a trial version for Mac Leopard users - but nothing for me yet :( But I am not unhappy with Safari, Firefox, Camino and Opera

But do we know if Google's os will run Windows apps?

I have no idea. If it does, then Microsoft will have a much bigger problem selling Windows. I guess we will find out in the next year or two.

Suddenly, it's a death-match: Google readies Windows rival:

As Microsoft launches Bing against Google, the search giant has struck back, straight at Steve Ballmer's heart, announcing a full-blown PC operating system, called Chrome OS, to appear mid-2010.

The move recasts the rivalry between the two companies.

This just became a death-match.

This is big.

This is nuclear.

Only one company will emerge from this tussle, at least as we know it today.

Google's Windows rival to be free...

Google is hoping to gain greater control over how personal computers work by developing a free operating system that will attack Microsoft's golden goose - its long-dominant Windows franchise.

The new operating system will be based on Google's 9-month-old web browser, Chrome. Google intends to rely on help from the community of open-source programmers to develop the Chrome operating system, which is expected to begin running computers in the second half of 2010.

The early versions of the Chrome operating system will be tailored for "netbooks," a breed of low-cost, less powerful laptop computers that are becoming increasingly popular among budget-conscious consumers primarily interested in surfing the web.

That is a direct challenge to Microsoft, whose next operating system, Windows 7, is being geared for netbooks as well as larger computers.

Google declares war on Windows with new OS ...

Google has set the technology world alight with the announcement that it is working on a new operating system for personal computers to rival Microsoft's ubiquitous Windows and which promises to "make computers better".

The move takes the two companies' rivalry to a whole new level, and pitches Google into the very business on which Microsoft built its dominance of the software industry.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
