Susan Boyle - from Scottish nobody to worldwide sensation....

Days after Susan Boyle caused a sensation on Britain's Got Talent she has conquered another media market far from her home in Blackburn, Scotland.

America is going nuts for the lady. Under the headline "Just Who Is The Singer Susan Boyle?", the San Francisco Chronicle noted: "Unless you live under a rock, you know about the Scottish woman who has taken the industrialised world by storm."

How did Susan Boyle do it?

A middle aged Scottish spinster with untamed hair and a plain-spoken manner has captivated millions of music lovers and confounded celebrity watchers with her rise to fame after appearing on a British TV talent show.

Susan Boyle, at 47, became one of the world's hottest celebrities virtually overnight after her rendition of I Dreamed a Dream on Britain's Got Talent this month.

She has appeared on Larry King Live in the United States and in countless newspaper and internet articles. The clip of her song has been viewed around 50 million times on website YouTube.

Some estimates put her total internet hits past the 100 million mark.

But while most people see her story as a fairytale, some say it casts an unflattering light on the public and its preconceived notions about beauty and fame.

She doesn't know her place...

The thing that made Susan's appearance on the show all the more remarkable was that she faced a hostile audience that openly mocked her, yet she silenced and won them over within four or five bars of her rendition of Les Miserables' 'I Dreamed a Dream'.

I like every aspect of this story.

As an unemployed charity-worker, I wonder how feverishly some media is digging around for some semblance of impropriety.

I'm glad I don't think like the celebrity judges or the audience - I watched the performance with an open mind. I hope she profits well from her talent

Battle for millions: Susan Boyle ad war...

Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle is at the centre of a multi-million dollar advertising stand-off between YouTube and a British television station.

The 48-year-old former unemployed church volunteer has shot to fame and fortune after her performance on Britain's Got Talent TV show.

And YouTube video clips of her singing I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables have been viewed more than 75 million times in a fortnight.

That's worth big money in advertising terms.

No doubt. But I don't imagine they'll find much. She claims to never even have been kissed!!

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
