One hit wonders?

Shawn

Recommended Posts

I have a lot of their albums. Hooking me early in an artist's career seems to end the career.

How many do you guys remember?

I'll start.

Katrina & the Waves

Geraldo

Devo

Otis Redding (forgive me)

Lifehouse

Chubawamba

Del Shannon

There are a hell of a lot more, but that should be enough to inspire a few groans and memories.

No way Otis Redding, Del Shannon and Devo could truly be called one-hit wonders...they all had successful recording and touring careers. A true one-hit wonder is an artist like Norman Greenbaum, who had one MONSTER hit "Spirit In The Sky", which can still be heard in movie soundtracks and commercials, but other than that his career was nondescript.

But each of them only really had one song that became a big hit.

By that logic, then, would The Grateful Dead be a 1 hit or no hit wonder?

I'd say so. Touch of Gray is all that really charted.

One hit wonder isn't an indication of talent as much as an indicator of what's wildly popular. Some of these guys were good enough, or unique enough, to have more hits. It just did not happen.

edit - I see you found a Redding charter. :P

Some of it is personal opinion I suppose.

2nd edit - #35?

To define hits as merely top 40 success is too narrow a judgement in music....album sales and longevity should be considered as well. The fact that a group can keep a recording contract for years indicates some sort of sales success.

Semisonic had two songs that became a hit, "Closing Time" and "Singing in My Sleep". Still, you don't hear much out of them these days though

For as happy as I was to run out and buy their 2 cd's, I've alsways thought that Blind Melon belonged under this category too.

Yeah..that was a catchy tune. Should we add "The Eve of Destruction"...forgot who did that, but it came out about the same time..

Yeah, I've been thinking of 'Epic', which I have here somewhere but can't remember who did it.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
