Guitarist Satriani accuses Coldplay of plagiarism

Recommended Posts

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Rock guitarist Joe Satriani has sued British band Coldplay, accusing the Grammy-nominated stars of plagiarizing one of his songs.

Satriani's copyright infringement suit, filed on Thursday in Los Angeles federal court, claims the Coldplay song "Viva La Vida" incorporates "substantial original portions" of his 2004 instrumental "If I Could Fly."

The 52-year-old guitar virtuoso is seeking a jury trial, damages and "any and all profits" attributable to the alleged copyright infringement.

Maybe Coldplay stole from both artists and combined them?

There's a bit of a difference in an unknown US band making accusations that they cant back up and Joe Satriani claiming he wrote it first when he actually did. Whether it's a true rip off or just an amazingly inspired coincidence, there's no denying that the two tunes are a lot alike.

UK newspaper, American band .... what's the difference? Pop music is really a bastardization of other pop tunes - which is why I don't generally leap to the conclusion that something was plagiarized. But if I were an artist that was ripped off, I know I'd think differently about it.

Not much difference... just a twangier accent and a few thousand miles :)

You'd think differently as in... sue too or... think differently as in realise that plagiarism is the greatest form of compliment?

Whatever works!

The copyright laws need revamped. The songwriter might be right in this instance, but ... corporate powers have locked up copyrights of their artists work for years and are sue crazy. It's hurting emerging artists ...

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
