Steve Ferrand & Friends: BCN EP

1. Just A Kiss

2. Check It Out

3. Morning Glory (Old School Mix)

‘Fuck Berlin, Barcelona has a beach’ read Funk D’Void’s t-shirt at the Sonar festival a few years ago. But a beach is not all Barcelona has going for it, and something of a conspiracy has been quietly stirring in the Catalan city. It’s become a haven for a diaspora of DJs and producers scheming a revolution of the deep - proper house music. On the ‘BCN EP’, one of these renegades, Steve Ferrand, teams up with two other Barcelona residents to create cuts that reflect the magical emergent return to the deep fermenting in their new home.

1.‘Just A Kiss’– Steve Ferrand teams up with Vincenzo for some nonchalantly slothful tripped-out techno. ‘Just A Kiss’ is an enrapturing convolution of sound, perfect for the break of dawn.

2. ‘Check It Out’ – A deep, hazy, hypnotic romp; you never quite know when this track’s done. You think you get it, and then Steve Ferrand and Pete Sung throw in another brilliant twist.

3.‘Morning Glory’ (Old School Mix)– A mix that wouldn’t have been out of place in the Hacienda. Stinging bass and sinister soft keys do sterling work, but the beauty of ‘Morning Glory’ is that it doesn’t do too much.

A veteran of the free party scene, Steve Ferrand’s expertise lay in sunrise and sunset sets. Now living in Barcelona amongst a community of deep-loving DJs and producers, Steve’s translated his appreciation of diverse and emotive music into top-notch production. He’s collaborated with Vincenzo on Dessous Recordings, remixed Francois DuBois, and has had solo material out on Urban Torque.

Barcelona resident, Vincenzo Ragone, made his mark on Steve Bug’s excellent Dessous label through a number of singles and two artist albums, ‘1-800-Vincenzo’ (1998) and ‘Welcome to Zanarkand’ (2002). He has also released top quality house records on Silver Network and Transport.

A regular on the global house and techno scene, Pete Sung has been splitting time between New York and his new home, Barcelona, for the past two years. He’s recently been producing in partnership with Steve Ferrand and Jay Leblone (Soma), and has started the new label, ‘Open Air Music’, with Christian Smith (Tronic) and James Healy (The Agriculture, Open Air Bar).

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
