They say if you can make it in New York and London you CAN make it anywhere. These two cities have the midas touch when it comes to dream catching only the top prize in new music to then filter out to the rest of the planet. Just call NYC and LDN the Ellis Island(s) for universal musical migrations. The August episode of NYC/LDN* explores the globalization of the modern day freedom song by reaching as far deep as the townships of South Africa to introduce the exclusive debut performance of BLK JKS. While continuing to weave the tale of two cities, NYC/LDN marshals a few enchalant tastemakers by the likes of Phil Asher (restless soul), DJ Reborn (Ubiquita NYC), and Patchwork Pirates (Thugs N Hugs) to help set Cargo's brick house on fire. Plus to add a savory new element to the NyLO experience, Dante's Fried Chicken (NYC) will be curating a NYC inspired street food menu in tribute to the August talent line up.

The second installation of NYC/LDN grants headlining entry to South African next "real" sensation BLK JKS. Already garnering accolades from media heavyweights both in Europe and the U.S., BLK JKS has taken a fresh approach to creating a forthcoming pandemic sound. Past iconic rock emancipators from Led Zepplin to Robert Nester Marley lend inspiration to this guitar slaying foursome in addition to their personal narrations of growing up in and out of a divided nation. Their November 2007 debut release of Lakeside 10' vinyl sold out within its first week at Rough Trade. BLK JKS are featured both in the July issue of Dazed & Confused, and the Observer Music Monthly. Their latest ep "Mystery" is now out at the finest music shops worldwide.

Phil Asher is the impresario of West London sound. As founding member of restless soul label, Phil and his comrades have taken the soulful dance sound past its W1 cosmopolitian post code. Phil's knack of creating a continuum for keeping bodies giddy has kept die hard followers anticipating every new release he puts out, including those on the restless soul imprint. His upcoming album "Phlash and Friends" released on Archive Records in September features guest includes Dego, Rich Medina, Ommas from Sa Ra, and Benji B. His musical diversity ranges from being one of the pioneers of the legendary broken beat club night CO-OP to resident dj of Soul Heaven. Phil will be bringing more of that West meets East sound to Cargo in August where he will be spinning all of his trademark selections of "quality timeless music with big production."

DJ Reborn is not like any other female dj you have ever heard before. This Brooklyn based fly girl has been lacerating dance floors across America for past decade while intimidating many of her more veteran male peers. DJ Reborn musical versatility and enduring reputation is what makes her one of New York's most respected and sought after talents. She has been called to share stages and drop her heavy mixes of hip hop, reggae, house and afrobeat with some of today's best in live performers including The Roots, Common, Talib Kweli and Ms. Lauryn Hill. Reborn also happens to make up one third of super sexy dj collective, Ubiquita, who have been throwing crazy affairs in the Lower East Side for the past five years running.

Its good to see that bass has a mighty fine London agent in Patchwork Pirates. The Pirates dedication to the "stop start flavors" and hissy cymbals that are rooted in the vibrations of booty bass and baltimore club, is what makes their sets pump up the jams. For two years running their internationally branded party Thugs N Hugs has roll call the likes of progressive bass heads including Sinden (London), Toddla T (Sheffield), and Team Canada DJs (Montreal).

Chicken never tasted this good. New York's culinarian pop idol Dante Gonzales variety show/house party "Dante's Fried Chicken" is aiming to strip KFC red stripes with the help of his music celebrity best friends - M.I.A., SantoGold, and Spank Rock. Dante takes his family's traditional southern American recipes and upgrades them to an even more delicious, NYC approved healthier versions. The secret ingredient to his success is that he dips all that soul food into a mix with a few hot under/overground music steppers (see above) who cook with him and perform to a feast of hungry music fans. The Cargo street cafe is handing over their kitchen for ONE NIGHT ONLY to NYC/LDN to have Dante cook up a special menu lovingly inspired by the guest performers of the night.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
