I got the girls for an extra day so we went yardsaling. One section of the city was having it's 25th annual yard sale so we figured we'd start with that.

Clearly I was way off with my estimate of the scope of their activities. We walked around for some odd 3 hours and never saw half of the sales. For 28 dollars we bought about 40 toys [swords, shields, guns, cuddlies, etc.] and a short sword for me.

Getting home and looking at it I was struck by the sudden understanding of why we hear about crazy people being arrested for brandishing swords in public. The damn things are too cool. Canada should pass a law requiring every person over the age of 18 to carry one.

And reinstate dueling.

I got a good chuckle about half way through the walking because the girls would insist on carrying around their favorite purchases while I was left to carry the others. Morgan, 5, went up to this one sale carrying a plastic uzi in one hand and a large plastic shield in the other. She chose a dainty pink purse. The guy running the sale thought they went well together.

Kentucky Derby watching...at home on TV. I don't want to be surrounded by over 100,000 drunks, although I'm sure method would be right at home in that environment, either as a participant or as a catalyst.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
