Best Songs 0f 2007 (Various Lists)

Recommended Posts

Since music has subdivided into many subcultures, I think Song Lists are probably more useful to the average listener than album lists. With that in mind, I've put together a select list of music websites and bloggers, representing various genres--most which come with nice reviews, mp3s and videos. If yours wasn't listed, feel free to join in and post it.

To be practical about it, find a blogger whose tastes seem to match yours and take it from there--or if you want to explore another musical genre, there's plenty to choose from below.

***

Where better to begin than with The Passion of Weiss - the best humorist and best hip-hop reviewer on the web.

The Sound Of Marching Feet

SOMF is a blogger out of Austin, Texas. I am noting his selections because I liked his choice of songs, and the fact that he posted mp3s and sample lyrics with them. You should check out his website for his top 25 albums as well - he has good taste in music.

The National - Mistaken For Strangers

Make up something to believe in your heart of hearts

so you have something to wear on your sleeve of sleeves

so you swear you just saw a feathery woman

carry a blindfolded man through the trees

Andrew Bird - Dark Matter

When I was just a little boy

I threw away all of my action toys

When I became obsessed with operation

Okkervil River - Unless It's Kicks

What a dream in the dark

About working so hard

About growing so stoned

Trying not to turn up

Trying not to believe in the light

On your own

Songs of Green Pheasant - Boats

This song is so beautiful and Duncan mumbles a bit so just listen.

Radiohead - All I Need

It's all wrong

It's all right

It's all wrong

It's all right

Low - Murderer

Don't act so innocent

I've seen you pound your fist into the earth

And I've read your book

It seems that you could use another fool

Well I'm cruel

And I look right through

Animal Collective - Fireworks

Attractive day in the rubble of the night from before.

I can't walk in a vacuum, I feel ugly, feel my pores.

It's the trees of this day that I do battle with for the light.

Then I start to feel tragic, people greet me, I'm polite.

LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends

You spent the first five years trying to get with the plan,

and the next five years trying to be with your friends again.

LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great

The worst is all the lovely weather,

I'm sad, it's not raining.

The coffee isn't even bitter,

Because, what's the difference?

Bright Eyes - Coat Check Dream Song

I slept with that dealer all summer

The ecstasy is still in my spine

Coat Check I couldn't remember

Walked into the winter, came out on the other side

Beirut - Cliquot

Set fire to foundation and burn out the station

You'll never get nothing of mine

The pane of my window will flicker and billow

I won't leave a stitching behind

Jose Gonzalez - Cycling Trivialities

Don't know which way to turn.

Every trifle becoming big concerns.

All this time you were chasing dreams,

without knowing what you wanted them to mean.

Kevin Drew - Tbtf

slice my eyes took me through

another night that goes all night through

tries to seize what their hearts have lost

my best friend took me in

laid me down beside my own sins

and I said "can you please forgive the love?"

Deerhunter - Cryptograms

My greatest fear

I fantasized

The days were long

The weeks blew by

Before I knew

I was awake

My days were through

It was too late

Sigur Ros - I Gaer

I don't speak Icelandic

Spoon - Finer Feelings

I was part-time at the Tasty Prawn

That and moving furniture and cutting lawns

Covered in newsprint, staying up real late

Just holding out for some fate

The Twilight Sad - That Summer, At Home I Became The Invisible Boy

and fourteen and you know

that I'm looking the wrong way

and is the past outside

or in this lovely home

Kings of Leon - Knocked Up

I don't care what nobody says, no

I'm going to be her lover

Always mad and usually drunk

But I love her like no other

Menomena - Muscle n' Flo

There's so much more left to do

Well I'm not young

But I'm not through

Menomena - Wet and Rusting

I made you a present, you’ll never expect it

And when you unravel the secret will travel, oh

It's hard to take risks, with a pessimist

The Weakerthans - Virtute The Cat Explains Her Departure

For a while, I heard you missing steps in the street

And your anger pleading in an uncertain key

Singing the sound of you that you found for me

Dan Deacon - Wham City

I hope in my heart

that we on a whole will die

and the earth be left alone

just beast and bee and fish and tree

this hope I wish will someday be

Panda Bear - Bros.

i know myself and i know what i want to do

im doing my best and i want to know is it good for you?

you give me trouble

you give me everything that you've got

ill show you that whats right for me aint for you

Caribou - She's The One

time and time I hear things that can't be true

and it's only talk cause she'll never be so cruel

every night there's a new name on her arm that I don't think I recognize and it's never strange just how long she stays away

I guess I'll have to compromise

John Vanderslice - Kookaburra

Lightning shot from the sky

It breathed life into every, every living thing

It made you, it made me

It gave us the Kookaburra

It gave us Frangipani tree

St. Vincent - Paris Is Burning

Enclosed in this letter there's a picture

Black and white for your refrigerator

Sticks and stones have made me smarter

It's words that cut me under my armor

Explosions In The Sky - The Birth and Death of The Day

No lyrics here, and none needed.

Caspian - Asa

ditto.

All those that know me, know that I find humor in many things. Well, this year (and many of the last few years) the thing that I found funniest was R Kelly. So to end the list making season with a bang, I present to you the most hilarious song of the year.

R. Kelly - Sex Planet

Girl now that you're next to me

We'll be just like satelites

Watching over the Earth

We'll make space our paradise

Girl I promise this will be painless(painless)

We'll take a trip to planet Uranus

Uh just put your trust in me

And girl i promise destination

will be a trip that you will never forget

I'm gonna take you out of this world

So hold on tight my dear

NY Post - 2007 Songs To Download (Compiled by Mary Huhn)

1. “Rehab," Amy Winehouse

The song wasn't ironic at first, but the Brit soul singer lived up to her art - and it turned into a Britney and Lindsay singalong.

2. "I'm Not Going to Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You," Black Kids

Poppy Jacksonville, Fla., "kids" song makes you feel like being 15 again - without all that pesky angst.

3. "We Used To Vacation," Cold War Kids

Choppy piano, art-punk/blues vocals and desperate lyrics.

4. "Drivin' Me Wild," Common featuring Lily Allen

Triple threat: This Common and Allen track was produced by Kanye.

5. "I Wanna Have Your Babies," Natasha Bedingfield

Hyper, silly, contagious ode to what women are really thinking. Pregalicious fun.

6. "Fluorescent Adolescent," Arctic Monkeys

"You used to get it in your fishnets, now you only get it in your nightdress" - the best first line, ever.

7. "Gimme More," Britney Spears

Art in the form of a miracle production team. It's not Britney, bitch.

8. "Watch Me Fall Apart," Hi-Fi

Staccato strings add drama to this pitiful pop tale.

9. "Don't Let Him Waste Your Time," Jarvis Cocker

Pulp frontman goes retro, retreats to the '60s.

10. "Ludlow Street," Suzanne Vega

Strings and sadness.

11. "What Would Jay-Z Do?," Ben Lee

Thank God for skinny white indie rockers.

12. "Charmer," Kings of Leon

High-impact, with minimal lyrics, punk guitar and howls.

13. "15 Step," Radiohead

Closest thing to a single from a band that obviously doesn't care about singles.

14. "Thou Shalt Always Kill," Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip

Lo-fi dance track with "Just a band" lyrics. Assaults rock idols; rants against stupidity.

15. "Hljomalind," Sigur Ros

More moodiness from the Icelandic masters of the sonic landscape. Sigur Rad.

16. "Closer," Travis

Melancholy-but-catchy tune.

17. "Fake Empire," the National

8. "This Is a Song," the Magic Numbers

Sweet throwback full of harmonies from a brother-sister rock duo.

19. "Rest My Chemistry," Interpol

Dark rockers deliver dynamic guitar riffs. Like a really good one-night stand.

20. "Feel Good Inc. (Stanton Warriors Remix)," Gorillaz

A thumping seven-minute-plus redo of the animated group's biggest hit.

21. "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors," Editors

Dark, melodic rock with one of the year's better drumbeats. Light it up.

22. "Falling Slowly," Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglov

Heartfelt Irish ballad from the movie "Once." Gushy goodness.

23. "Mary, Mary," Velvet Revolver

Ex-Gunner Slash's guitar riffs are among his best. Axl who?

24. "Stronger," Kanye West

Boasting over a Daft Punk song never sounded so cool. Almost justifies Kanye's ego.

25. "Northern Whale," the Good, the Bad & the Queen

Catchy piano-anchored song

courtesy of ex Blur frontman Damon Albarn's supergroup.

26. "Is There a Ghost," Band of Horses

Melodic, guitar-driven rock with three lyrical lines.

27. "It's Not Your Fault," Athlete

Coldplay-esque earnest Britpop kicked up a notch.

28. "Welcome Ghosts," Explosions in the Sky

Another epic instrumental from the Texas guys behind the "Friday Night Lights" soundtrack.

29. "Be Good or Be Gone," Fionn Regan

Irish indie genius meets the challenge.

30. "Taken Man," Andy Friedman

Devastatingly honest, brilliantly written. Every married man alive will relate.

31. "Spare-Ohs," Andrew Bird

Tortured, catchy and way too clever. Just the way we like it.

32. "Holiday," Albert Hammond Jr.

Yes, it's that Strokes guy. Chill out and swoon.

33. "Not Half Right," Elliott Smith

Perfectly sad acoustic gem.

34. "Watch Us Work It," Devo

The past seven years prove that de-evolution is real.

35. "Are You Sensation," Tigercity

Like dancing all night and developing a designer drug habit, but cheaper.

36. "Someone To Love," Fountains of Wayne

Vignette of lonely would-be lovers and a fateful NYC taxi.

37. "Apologize," Timbaland featuring OneRepublic

The hip-hop producer's beats give the (mildly cheesy) song a whole new spark.

38. "Lights On," the Pierces

Southern sisters don't want to do it in the dark.

39. "Energy," Apples in Stereo

Sunny Oasis-ish pop from Stephen Colbert's faves. Like Pop-Tarts covered in honey.

40. "Tears Dry on Their Own," Amy Winehouse

A Motown-fab ode to a sleazy affair.

41. "Father Forgive Me," Ja Rule

Update to a Fab Four track - by sampling strings, rhyming "Eleanor Rigby" and "Father Forgive Me."

42. "Rich Woman," Robert Plant and Alison Krauss

On this odd-couple duet the pair are slitheringly sexy.

43. "Slow Train," Shooter Jennings

Oak Ridge Boys harmonize behind Shooter's vocals.

44. "Magnolia Soul," Ozomatli

1975-vintage Earth Wind & Fire garnished with a touch of hip-hop. Essential.

45. "Holy Diver," Killswitch Engage

A most excellent screamo cover of the overly dramatic Dio classic.

46. "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town," the Killers

New life for wounded-vet/cheating wife tale.

47. "Stop Me," Mark Ronson featuring Daniel Merriweather

Smiths classic overlayed with the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On." Better than sex and chocolate.

48. "Gimme Shelter," Patti Smith

Patti swaggers like Mick in a bra.

49. "I Want To Walk You Home," Paul McCartney featuring Allen Toussaint

The ex-Beatle sings "I want to hold your hand" again in this Fats Domino tribute.

50. "Hey Lupe," Los Straitjackets

South of the border version of rock 'n' roll oldie "Hang On Sloopy" makes you want to pick up a guitar - and learn Spanish.

(DJ) D3 PowerHouse's Top 60 Songs of 2007 (Mixtape to be posted)

60. A Place to Bury Strangers - "To Fix the Gash in Your Head"

Violent, glorious fuzz-rock. Commercial for Death by Audio pedals.

59. Telepathe - "Chromes On It"

Brooklyn girls listen to Three Six beats. Great fun ensues.

58. Fuck Buttons - "Bright Tomorrow"

Repetition, repetition, repetition, repetition. Eventually, distortion and yelling come in.

57. Soulja Boy - "Crank Dat (Souja Boy)"

Best loud with people who pretend to know the dance.

56. Frightened Rabbit - "the Greys"

The most insistent vocals and cymbals in indie all year.

55. John C. Reilly - "Royal Jelly"

Cox's Dylan period, absolutely on the money. "...rimjob fairy teapots..."

54. Ulrich Schnauss - "Stars"

The usual shoegaze adjectives. Drives hard towards a freakout, though.

53. Glass Candy - "Beatific"

Bassline sounds pixelated. Ida No's vocals are whispered just right.

52. Girls Aloud - "Black Jacks"

Album sorta disappointed. Typically wonderful energetic pop on this, though.

51. Prinzhorn Dance School - "Up! Up! Up!"

Non sequiturs, minimalist as hell, sounds made for me, no?

50. The Hives - "Tick Tick Boom"

Hives by numbers. But, as usual, that means it's awesome.

49. Dude N' Nem - "Watch My Feet"

Shows the power of a good tempo change and dance.

48. Ame - "Balandine"

Versatile dance floor murderer. Goes hard for over eleven minutes.

47. Dave Aju & Invisible Art Trio - "Be Like the Sun"

Somewhat disorienting techno. Vocals are cool, though, as are horns.

46. Project Pat - "Don't Call Me No More"

Beat is huge, and it switches up to great effect.

45. Black Moth Super Rainbow - "When the Sun Grows on Your Tongue"

Sounds exactly like its title. Most summery song of 2007.

44. Les Savy Fav - "Patty Lee"

They still run this NY dance rock shit. This jumps.

43. !!! - "Heart of Hearts"

Makes me sweat just listening to it. Sweat sweat sweat?

42. Vampire Weekend - "Mansard Roof"

Ivy leaguers steal African beats, mostly live up to hype.

41. Feist - "1, 2, 3, 4"

Indie chicks and dude-bros alike sing along, so damn pretty.

40. Jay-Z - "Ignorant Shit (ft. Beanie Sigel)"

Black Album outtake still glorious, Blaze's beat and Jay's chorus kill.

39. Thomas Mayer - "Ueber Wiesen"

Happy Kompakt. The wet synths midway put it over the top.

38. Future of the Left - "Manchasm"

Andy Falkous writing lyrics again makes me really, really happy.

37. Kanye West - "Good Life (ft. T-Pain)"

The beat is summer Chicago and the Fiddy bite seals it.

36. Arcade Fire - "Keep the Car Running"

God, they're so melodramatic. Also, so good at being melodramatic.

35. Shellac - "The End of Radio"

Dirgy epic with Albini rambling. As awesome as that sounds.

34. Burial - "Archangel"

The most dramatic of Burial's ghostly, gauzy, barely danceable dubstep.

33. Roisin Murphy - "Overpowered (Kris Menace Remix)"

Is Kris Menace not actually French?!! Great song made better.

32. Hot Chip - "Shake A Fist"

Best thing they've done. Completely freaks out mid way through.

31. Chromatics - "Running Up That Hill"

Kate Bush cover yaaaay. This is so cold and gorgeous.

30. Radiohead - "Reckoner"

A Radiohead song with percussion this cool? Yeah, I'm down.

29. Caribou - "Melody Day"

Upbeat, rollicking (can I say rollicking?) psych single that soars.

28. Dizzee Rascal - "Where's Da G's (ft. UGK)"

The beat is sinister as hell, and Bun-B slays it.

27. Deerhunter - "Spring Hall Convert"

Rolls along and rolls along and I get completely lost.

26. White Williams - "New Violence"

A perfect new-wave song, I think. Interesting textures and rhythms.

25. Cut Copy - "Hears on Fire"

Huge, emotional 80s track I'm always happy to hear out.

24. Britney Spears - "Hot as Ice"

T-Pain's vocal arrangements on the chorus are pure pop gold.

23. Lil' Wayne - "Upgrade"

The connections that Weezy's brain makes are beyond mere mortals.

22. Partial Arts - "Trauermusik"

Usher and Pearson win Total 8 with totally engrossing techno track.

21. Ricardo Villalobos - "Primer Encuentro Latinoamericano"

Villalobos rules at repetition and rhythm. Plus, a sweet chant.

20. 50 Cent - "I Get Money"

Fiddy stomps on anything in his path and destroys cities.

19. DJ Khaled ft. Akon, T.I., Fat Joe, Birdman and Lil Wayne - "We Takin' Over"

Wayne's verse is the best of the year. Beat's hot too.

18. Liars - "Freak Out"

Liars do Jesus and Mary Chain, succeed pretty much completely.

17. Muscles - "Sweaty"

Over-earnest and excited Australian dances. "Peace, love, ecstasy, unity, respect."

16. R. Kelly - "I'm a Flirt (Remix ft. T.I. and T-Pain)"

Another Kells remix classic. His last verse is especially fun.

15. Times New Viking - "Teenage Lust!"

Super lo-fi garage conveys excitement like only lo-fi garage can.

14. Lil' Mama - "Lip Gloss"

"Novelty hit" tag is irrelevant. This is pure, glorious fun.

13. The Field - "The Little Heart Beats so Fast"

Dance floor or headphones, feel yourself totally enveloped by it.

12. Solomun & Stimming - "Feuervogel"

Long build, sweet strings, surprising brass, awesome, really dramatic techno.

11. Orillia Opry - "I Lied"

Our of nowhere sad, quiet indie that really got me.

10. Amerie - "Take Control"

"You got my soul on fire" at 2:46. So thrilling.

09. M.I.A. - "Paper Planes"

Chorus makes it the most fun party song of 2008.

08. Los Campesinos - "You! Me! Dancing!"

Guitar intro, then flailing, jumping, and other good clean fun.

07. Studio - "Out There"

Sprawling post-punk epic, kraut to dub midway through. Maciej overjoyed.

06. Grinderman - "No Pussy Blues"

Nick Cave can't get laid. Rocks the fuck out instead.

05. Rihanna - "Umbrella"

Blasting from every single car this summer. Eh eh eh.

04. UGK - "Int'l Players Anthem (ft. Outkast)"

Perfect themed posse cut with the perfect, surprisingly versatile, beat.

03. Gui Boratto - "Beautiful Life"

Made me ecstatic as a DJ this year. So happy.

02. Beyonce - "Get Me Bodied (Extended Version)"

"Do the scissor leg, touch your heel, touch your toes."

01. LCD Soundsystem - "All My Friends"

Dancing at Randall's Island. With (a lot of) my friends.
