Google To Compete Head On With Facebook

TechCrunch reports that Google is planning a major assault on Facebook, the popular social network. Under the code name Maka-Maka, Google plans to use its feed engine 'to create “activity streams” similar to Facebook’s news and mini feeds. In addition, Google plans to 'allows developers to build apps for its social network Orkut, iGoogle, and other applications.'

And according to the NY Times, 'Google plans to begin introducing a common set of standards to allow software developers to write programs for Google’s social network, Orkut, as well as others, including LinkedIn, hi5, Friendster, Plaxo and Ning.'

"One of the things to say, very clearly, is that social networks as a phenomenon are very real,” Eric E. Schmidt, Google’s chief executive, said in a recent interview. “If you are of a certain age, you sort of dismiss this as college kids or teenagers. But it is very real.”

Sounds like Google means business.
