Harry Potter Book Leaked Online...and Through The Mail

New York Magazine reports:

?Not that we didn't see this coming, but some copyright-flouting Muggle (with questionable taste in carpeting) has posted pictures of every page of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on the Internet almost five days before the book's official release. Spoilers are currently rocketing through the blogosphere like so much Lindsay Lohan crotch photography, so if you're hoping to remain unspoiled, click carefully the next few days. (Vulture will never post spoilers, but we will link to them, and you can be certain the above link has already collected comments from spoiler-happy readers.) If you're really worried, you might want to unplug your computer, turn off all the lights, and hide in a closet until Hallows hits stores Friday at midnight. Um, because that's what we'll be doing.

Meanwhile, expect Bloomsbury to unleash its 24-hour litigation specialist on whoever they can identify immediately.

Edit, 11:48 a.m.: Wow, Bloomsbury's attack lawyers are on the stick! TorrentFreak's entire site is completely offline. You have to respect that kind of speedy justice.

Why would TorrentFreak get knocked offline? They would have only reported this the same as NY Magazine.

I'm getting nervous about spoilers - paranoid in fact. I'm considering switching off my internet and TV until I have finished the book...

[edit: read it more carefully and it TF were giving away spoilers]

I read the hacker's email and it sounds legit.

The guy has a limited grasp of English and yet sounds condescending.... hacker material.

Publisher takes action against Potter leaks

Scholastic says early mailing by an online merchant was a breach of sales agreement.

The violation of the Harry Potter embargo continued today, as Scholastic Inc., publisher of the blockbuster series, said as many as 1,200 copies of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" were mailed out to the customers of an online merchant, three days before the heavily guarded book was supposed to go on sale in bookstores across the nation.

Kyle Good, spokeswoman for Scholastic, implored fans who will receive the advance copies of the book to "keep the packages hidden until midnight on July 21," when the eagerly awaited novel is released.

the guy forgot to erase some things and that means he can be traced. Oops!

Maybe the culprit who uploaded the book stole the Cannon camera, too?

Yeah... some asshat on one of my other forums posted all of the spoilers in a thread in our spam section and pissed off about half of that community.. I pretty well dragged one of the local mods away from his video game to delete the thread.... >_<

Personally it doesn't matter to me if someone spoils the book/movie or whatever for me since it's still a good read/watch right? :)

But yeah... not sure if anyone here does, but do NOT go to ytmnd.com for a while.. they have all the spoilers flashing on their main page... >_>

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
