Maggie Rogers Announces Sophomore Album, Surrender

Maggie Rogers has revealed the first details of her sophomore album, Surrender. It will be released on July 29 through Capitol Records, the 12-track project re-teams Rogers with producer Kid Harpoon, who worked on her acclaimed 2019 debut, Heard It in a Past Life and has also previously collaborated with Harry Styles, Shawn Mendes and Florence + The Machine.

As of yet, there’s no lead single from Surrender, but Rogers, a former SPIN intern, today released a 100-second album trailer that she co-directed by Michael Scanlon. In it, snippets of new music can be heard behind Rogers’ gradually intensifying narration: “Here’s all I have. It’s yours to take. Love. Hate. Anger. Feral joy. This is the story of what happened when I finally gave in.”

After wrapping the Heard It in a Past Life tour in October 2019, Rogers relocated from New York to the Maine coast and “cut herself off from the noise of the outside world,” according to a statement. This change of location allowed her to channel “the frenetic intensity of the last two years of her life, bringing her bracing honesty to stories of anger and peace and self-salvation, transcendence through sex and freedom through letting go.”

Surrender was eventually recorded in Rogers’ parents’ garage, New York’s Electric Lady Studios and Peter Gabriel’s famed Real World Studios outside Bath, England.

Amid all of the work on the album, Rogers also found time to enroll in a graduate program at Harvard Divinity School, where she is “studying the spirituality of public gatherings and the ethics of power in pop culture,” according to a September 2021 tweet.
