CD review: Yes, I'm a Witch -YOKO ONO

The wonderfully eccentric Yoko Ono shows she still has a sense of humour as well as major pulling power.....

Sixteen artists were given Ono's back catalogue from which they all chose a song to rework. The end result is definitely more hit than miss.

The downside to much of Ono's early avant-garde work – the screeching – is thankfully kept to a minimum.

Shitake Monkey inject some synth-pop funk into O'Oh while Le Tigre's reworking of the feminist classic Sisters certainly benefits from an updated rhythm, as does DJ Spooky's sublime trip-hop approach to Rising.

Prog rockers Porcupine Tree take a gentle acoustic approach to the ballad Death of Samantha, which nicely contrasts the raging fuzzed guitars of The Brother Brothers on the title track.

Cat Power shows her class on the duet Revelations while Spiritualised's Jason Pierce (Walking on Thin Ice) and The Flaming Lips (Cambridge 1969/2007) do what they do best by building up a discordant wall of sound for Ono to wail over.

By the end of it all it proves how challenging, and yet musically clever, Ono's early work was.

We posted a couple of music downloads here. A number of interesting artists contributed. I think it's impresive to see a woman in her 70s who can still rock

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
