Borat Is Dead

borat.jpgSacha Baron Cohen has killed off his controversial character Borat.

The British-born comic star insists the offensive Kazakhstani reporter is now too famous to fool anyone again, but has revealed he is already working on new ideas.

"There are a number of things that are in development.

"The next thing will probably be a scripted comedy.

"I think the days of me going undercover are probably over."

He added: "There are a number of challenges.

"One is that I have to stay in character usually for about eight hours at a time, because if someone gets suspicious and says, 'Wait a minute, he's standing there in the corner like a guy from England', then everything's over.

"There's a lot of physical preparation - I never washed the suit, when I come into the room there's immediately this terrible smell. Borat doesn't wear deodorant so there is this kind of dreadful Soviet-bloc smell the moment I walk in."

And he revealed he sometimes felt like an assassin when he was making the film - especially during a dinner party scene where he returns to the table from the toilet clutching a bag of his own human waste.

He added: "There is a moment when you feel almost like a hit man.

"You look in the mirror and it's as if you've pulled the gun out and you're about to assassinate someone and you're doing a hit and you know everything's going to change. Everyone's having a good time but I'm about to bring a bag of fresh faeces to the table."

"At some point I've got to reveal the real me, reveal the real moustache."

He laughed off speculation that he could be in line for an Oscar at this year's Academy Awards. It would be so bizarre.

"When I made this film I never intended to get any critical acclaim.

"You want to make your friends and fans laugh. I'm just happy to get a couple of nominations and return to England."

Interview from NPR (US) radio.

Well it was about time he was moving on to something new, there was nowhere else for Borat to go. Cohen has done well to create two hilarious characters like Ali G and Borat. Be interesting to see what he moves on to next.

The video is no longer available.

This is what he said:

I want to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press. And I just want to say this movie was a life-changing experience. I saw some amazing, beautiful, invigorating parts of America. But I saw some dark parts of America. An ugly side of America. A side of America that rarely sees the light of day. I refer, of course, to the anus and testicles of my co-star Ken Davitian. Ken, as I...when I was in that scene, and I stared down and saw your two wrinkled Golden Globes on my chin, I thought to myself, 'I'd better win a bloody award for this.' And then when my 300 pound co-star decided to sit on my face and squeeze the oxygen from my lungs, I was faced with a choice: death, or to breathe in the air that had been trapped in a small pocket between his buttocks for 30 years. Kenneth, if it was not for that rancid bubble, I would not be here today."

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
