Rough Trade Shops favourite albums of 2006 - Based on sales and staff votes

1 beirut the gulag orkestar Ever heard what sounds like a Balkan gypsy orchestra, only DIY-bedroom produced by a 20 year-old fella from the US of A? Here's your chance... simply unmissable.

2 gossip standing in the way of control Right about now. The punk soul sister. Check it out now.

3 css cansei de ser sexy A vibrant testament to that age-old adage that sex sells... Brazilian-punk style.

4 allen, lily alright, still West London's very own 'Marmite' (love or hate) pop persona delivers more astute wit and musical charm than the rest of the national charts put together.

5 brakes the beatific visions Returning with more of the same taught, sprung musicianship - one class act.

6 lewis, jenny with the watson twins rabbit fur coat Keep this remarkable 'hot-water bottle' album within reach for moments of comfort.

7 hot chip the warning Brave and deliberately different, a future classic that challenges convention with unashamed glee.

8 campbell, isobel and lanegan, mark ballad of the broken seas Every track sparkles with a roughly shorn elegance evoking tales of Wild West romanticism. Think Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra minus the kitsch.

9 the pipettes we are the pipettes Unashamed good-time pop that references the likes of the Shangri La's, Bananarama, The Crystals et al. Go see them live if you get the cha cha chance.

10 vetiver to find me gone Vetiver (Vetiveria Zizanoides) is a perennial grass of the Poaceae, native to India. It's also Andy Cabic's tender, warm sounding American folk band, whose second album astounds with artistic accomplishment.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next.
