Laptops armed with Intel's new Core 2 Duo mobile processor officially went on sale in Australia last week with Dell leading the charge.

The new Intel processor, which has been reported to substantially boost performance while reducing power consumption, contains two processing cores on a single chip and is the successor to the Core Duo launched earlier in the year.

Desktops running the Core 2 Duo are not expected to be available in Australia until the middle of next month, but this week Dell introduced a series of notebooks sporting the new chip.

The company said the processor would be available here from early next week on its XPS mobile gaming systems, Precision mobile workstations and selected Latitude and Inspiron notebooks.

Samsung, Toshiba and Alienware are also expecting to ship units here next month, and Acer said it was looking to transition to the new processor in September and introduce products in October.

The Intel Core 2 Duo incorporates five separate mobile processors for different product types and a variety of desktop configurations for business, home, and enthusiasts such as high-end gamers.

The latest version of the processor is expected to better handle the multi-tasking needs typical of today's computer usage which combines activities such as instant messaging, word processing, web browsing, and anti-virus scanning. It also represents the end of the line for the Pentium brand.

David Perlmutter, senior vice president of Intel's Mobility Group said: "The dual-core processing power of the Core 2 Duo processor helps people handle the toughest of multi-tasking scenarios no matter where they are."

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
