Red state backlash hurts Chicks' tour

Recommended Posts

Country music trio the Dixie Chicks, still taking heat for criticizing U.S. President George W. Bush, are weathering sluggish ticket sales in several cities for their upcoming U.S. tour, industry watchers reported on Thursday.

While early ticket purchases for their first major tour in three years are generally robust in Northeastern cities, initial sales have fallen short of expectations in numerous markets, especially in the Midwest and South, forcing some dates to be scrubbed.

Dixie Chicks no strangers to controversy.....

One morning three years ago, the Dixie Chicks woke to find they were no longer sweethearts of the rodeo. Overnight, they had become America's most political group.

Can't say as I have anything of theirs either.

I don't see a lot of talent there.

Shawn, I know you're a hard-core classic country fan, liking the old-time folks like Webb Pierce, Ernest Tubb, Kitty Wells, etc. But saying that the Chicks don't have talent is being far too dismissive of modern country music and the spin-offs artists who are forging amalgamations of musical genres. The Chicks fall solidly in that camp. Their sound is clearly country-based owing to the musical sisters who are original group members, and the lead singer is the daughter of a famous steel guitar player...their sound is very much modern country music.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
