V/A - UNCOVERED

Part musical education, part expose and part really quite nice album, 'Uncovered' reveals 40 original tracks that many people are unaware are cover versions.

It is a deliberately varied and genre busting track list, revealing the lesser-known versions of tracks made famous by the likes of The Beatles, The Temptations, Kylie and Robbie Williams.

There is the first ever Motown single (Barrett Strong / 'Money (That's What I Want)' covered by The Beatles (and also The Flying Lizards), Jorge Ben's Taj Mahal (ripped off by Rod Stewart for 'Do You Think I'm Sexy?' and settled in court as a result) and World Party's 'She's The One' (for which Karl Wallinger is no doubt very grateful to Robbie Williams).

A heavy dose of Soul is included with tracks from Judy Street (Soft Cell's 'What'), The Supremes' Nathan Jones (Bananarama), The Miracles' 'Love Machine' (Wham) and The Delphonics' 'Ready Or Not' (The Fugees) plus some classic Reggae from John Holt

I'm a BIG JJCale fan. Clapton memorialized several of his cuts. Check him out.

7. ISLEY BROTHERS: WORK TO DO

Did the Average White Band do a version of this?

13. TOM SCOTT: GOTCHA

Tom Scott was the goto Sax session man in the seventies and early eighties. He was doing the Tonite Show for a while too

This was a big hit in its day. Who else did a version?

No one can do a cover of Marving Gaye.

This guy used to play with Johnny and Edgar Winters. Played in my home town when he was a teen.

29. SPENCER DAVIS GROUP: GIMME SOME LOVIN

Another big hit and the best version.

31. SMOKEY ROBINSON: THE TEARS OF A CLOWN

Another big hit.

A minor hit until the Beatles memorialized it.

Now this is a surprise to me

Nice post, M77

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
