Background on the new album "WHEN THE DUST SETTLES"

The album is a huge step forward since their successful 2003 release 'LAND OF THE GIANTS' and features more than 20 tracks ranging from hiphop party anthems to downbeat monsters with plenty of surprises in between.

Musically, 'WHEN THE DUST SETTLES' is nuts and contains traces of dub delays, salsa flutes, middle eastern organs, orchestral strings, razor sharp cuts (DJ Armee), driving bass (Cheeky) and swinging drums (Salvatore).

Although the album references reggae, funk, dub, soul, world, classical and rock music across it's 23 tracks, the outcome is a benchmark record for Australian hiphop with more flow than the mighty Swan River.

As ever, the lyrical ability is supreme across the frontline with MC's Optamus, Dazastah and Dyna-mikes rolling out potent rhymes on issues including sex, greed, power, speed, love, drugs, belief and life in Australia in 2004 with special appearances and collaborations with Koolism, Louis Slipperz (Taskforce UK), Layla, Hunter, MJ, Drapht, Porsah Laine and Paula to really get the party shaking.

DOWNSYDE mesh together the best of many styles, blending samples with instruments and serious lyrics with humorous hooks.

The end result is an album that is as schizophrenic as it is cohesive and one that tells the story of our times since the world went crazy in September 2001. The package is complete by the awesome album artwork design of ex-pat West Australian global graf guru DASH.

Brief History:

The fire and heart of the mc/dj combo that first started writing, performing and producing in 1996 is still as strong as ever but eight years on the beats and rhymes they create are righteous and tight. This is a tight knit team of hip-hop craftsmen with black belt quality and international style.

Since releasing their LAND OF THE GIANTS album in March 2003, Downsyde have taken some giant steps; racking up loads of radio play and album sales and travelling their mighty live shows across the nation.

Their travels have seen them play major events such as Falls Festival (04), St Kilda Festival (03), Homebake (03), In The Pines (03), Adventjah (03), COSmonautical (03), Mainbreak (04,05), Rock It (03), Splendour in the Grass (03), Global Festival (03), the national Big Day Out tour (04), Australia Day Concert Canberra (04), Terminal 9 (04), Good Vibrations (05), Pushover (05).

They've been spreading the Downsyde word right across the country; Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Jindabyne, Margaret River, Port Hedland, Christmas Island, Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek, Esperance, Albany, Kalgoorlie. Gnowangerup, Denmark, Karratha, Broome, Kununnurra, Lismore, Newcastle, Byron Bay and more.

During this touring schedule they have also shared the stage with some of the finest hip-hop and beats acts in the world; Jurassic 5, Cypress Hill, Grandmaster Flash, Black Eyed Peas, Naughty By Nature, Spearhead, Hilltop Hoods, Resin Dogs, Mark B, Koolism, Handsome Boy Modelling School, Mystro and more.

Your band sounds pretty impressive - that's quite a lineup of bands they've toured with. Have you spoken with anyone in the states re: background singers, or are you looking to get someone locally?

nah we wanna do something over the net, not many people locally that fit the part....

Ok. I will pass this on to a friend of mine in the industry and see what he suggests - he's fairly resourceful, knows everyone

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
