Springsteen Speaks: The Music of Pete Seeger

All Things Considered, April 26, 2006 · Bruce Springsteen first heard the music of Pete Seeger long ago, but it wasn't until the last decade or so that he truly immersed himself in it.

The more he learned about the music the American folk legend collected, performed, rewrote and transformed, the more he returned to it, Springsteen tells Melissa Block. And that got him thinking that perhaps his fans might be interested, too.

On his new album We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions, Springsteen reinterprets 13 songs from Seeger's songbook.

This is a great album...spontaneous and electric, recorded live in the studio with a massive band (totally unlike actual Pete Seeger recordings, which were usually just Seeger and his banjo). Find the song Buffalo Gals from the DVD too...it's not on the regular album.

Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
