For the second year in a row, Austin, Texas' South By Southwest Festival is offering hundreds of MP3s of the performing artists, for free download, as well as film trailers. SXSW is known as "South By Southwest Music, Film and Interactive Conferences and Festivals."

Texas music fest again bulged at the seams

AUSTIN, Texas (Hollywood Reporter) - The Texas state capital has survived another South by Southwest Music Conference & Festival, which now appears to be the biggest platform for live music in the country.

Final attendance figures had not been tallied by closing day Sunday, but it was obvious from jammed roadways and long lines at "must-see" performances by buzz-laden acts that the 20th annual confab had attained all-time high registrations and sales of wristbands for music festival admissions. In all, more than 1,300 acts played during the five-day event. Last year's event drew more than 8,000 attendees.

AUSTIN, Tex., March 19 — Why would musicians travel halfway across the country, or halfway across the world, to play a 40-minute set through a mediocre sound system for a few dozen people glancing at their cellphones?

Because, at the 20th annual South by Southwest Music event, there was a chance that among those people were the right ones: a booking agent, a manager, a band wanting tourmates, a music supervisor for a video game. The hope was that the right connection was somewhere among the 10,000 conventiongoers and the 4,000 people who bought wristbands to go club-hopping for the festival, which began on Wednesday.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
      You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention. 
      But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
