MacGyver Tip: Fix scratched CDs with toothpaste

READ MORE: CDs, DVDs, How To, MacGyver, Repair, digital media

If you’ve ever owned a CD or DVD, you’ve certainly had to deal with scratched up, unreadable media. Hardware Secrets has a simple solution:

a scratched CD can be recovered by polishing its plastic surface. If, after carrying out the above cleansing, the CD persists in giving reading errors, just polish the CD with toothpaste. That’s right, toothpaste. It works wonders, and you won’t spend a fortune buying professional cleaning kits.

Having learned this trick in college, I can vouch for it. Don’t expect to recover your most damaged CDs, but you certainly can work a little magic. Anyone else have any good CD repair tips that work for them? Let us know in the comments or at tips at lifehacker.com.

All the cds I have bought in the last few yrs are "once played" or "twice played". I buy the cd and make a copy. When the copy gets scratched I just toss it out the window and make another copy. Tossing it out the window works best if you are in a car because you will rarely see them again. When tossing them out the window at home you will generally find them next time you mow the grass. You can reduce the frequency of finding the cds in your yard by simply mowing the grass less often. If you have a good arm and small yard you can also let your neighbor find them. A last resort would be to put them in the trash. I hope these tips work for you. :)

Don't drive your tractor through Louisville, Kentucky when you're littering.....you'll hit some of the Republican politicians wearing orange jumpsuits who have to clean up our roads.

Around here the hardest thing to clean up is the demoliberals that are found dead on the side of the road. They smell a little worse when dead but at least they are quiet. :)

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
