With New Lead, Much the Same Sound

Thousands of auditions produced 15 contestants, of various colors and sexes, for "Rock Star: INXS," the CBS reality show that selected a new lead singer for the Australian band INXS. The show ran three times a week and went through dozens of songs and countless wardrobe changes, power chords and live-your-dream clichés. Then INXS simply chose the closest sound-alike to Michael Hutchence, its original lead singer, who killed himself in 1997.
